Florida to Fort Worth today! That was a haul for the kiddos and I. Should make it home tomorrow and begin preps for our family elk hunt. Everyone is very excited about the hunt, seeing family, and returning to some cooler weather. More to follow...

Joe

We'll be watching your progress, Joe. Here's wishing you every success.

Joe,

Hope our sister city treated you right!

Where in N.M are you hunting?

And good luck by the way!!!

Made it home and was greeted by snow today! We’ll be hunting in Unit 4, close to where we live. Was digging through my ammo for my 300 win M48 and turns out those handloads I thought I had with 200 ABs were only primed hulls. Rummaged through the junk pile and managed to find 7 150 grain corelockts. Not my first choice, but will do in a pinch I guess. Adjusted to put ‘em 3” high at 100 and will go from there. Got a little jammed and thought had another day to prep, but that’s how it goes sometimes. I’ve got the kiddos dressed warm for tomorrow morning and we’ll shed layers as we go. Cross those fingers guys!

Well friends, couldn’t quite seal the deal this morning, but had a great time in the mountains and the kiddos got to work on their glassing skills and build up those legs. Later on, I tried to thread the needle through some aspens on a really hard quartering away shot and didn’t make it into the vitals. I thought it was a lethal shot and that she was dead to rights so I didn’t shoot again for fear of taking two animals. You can actually see the elk in the timber in the background. The weak blood trail ended after about 40 yards so I’m hopeful the elk will be alright. The family combed the area pretty thoroughly afterwards, but no dice. I hope I can do a better job this evening.
V/R,
Joe

Beautiful pictures, Joe. Shots of the children are just alright by me. Pity on the elk. It happens to all of us if we hunt long enough. Hope things sort out soon. I took my wife for a longish drive yesterday afternoon, showing her some of my hunting areas. Found a largish cow moose being tended by a young bull. Then, soon after we saw several whitetails. During the drive, we saw several nice ruffies that gave us quite the display. Of course, I didn't take a rifle or shotgun with me, as I was spending time with my lady and not intending to hunt. How do those animals know these things?

Thanks for the pictures Joe.
Better luck next time.
Did something similar on a white tail except I hit the sternum to low on a head on shot. Pealed the meat and hide off but didn't get into the chest cavity, searched everywhere but couldn't find it.

Good luck Joe. Hope you can close the deal but the time with those kids is priceless.

I’ve also made this shot. All I found was some white hair and few specks of blood. Brother killed it about two weeks later in a green field. Didn’t seem to hinder her any though.

Joe I hope you get to fill that Elk tag (y). Taking your children to the outdoors is so important to their futures .
Thank you for those great photos.
Shoot straight, have fun and most of all be safe (y).
Looking forward to more posts!

Blessings,
Dan

So found some old Barnes TSX handloads I made up about 15 years ago and they shot pretty well out of the M48 Legacy. The rifle seems to shoot just about anything you feed it well. I had a shot at redemption with the kiddos and was lucky enough to connect well this time around.
