Mountain Caribou in the USA

When the wolf increase started, years ago, my first worry was for that small herd of caribou in the Selkirks. That herd had a history of wandering into Idaho, Washington, and into Canada as well.

Always small, it seems to have faded away. Sad.

Some of those herds are so small one cougar keying in on them could easily wipe them all out. There was a meat eater podcast about them that was very educational.

That is too bad, I know in northern Saskatchewan the wolf population is moving out of the forest and now there is a licenced season for them and farmers are allow to shoot them at any time.
They do have to be controlled.

We have a similar situation with 'mufflons' here.
They are originally from some islands in the medeteranian sea, but were introduced long ago.
The wolf doesn't seem to be listed as a predator in their genetic code and when the wolf came back after the iron curtain fell, they hit hard on the mufflon.
A few more years and they will be wiped out completely.
Ok, caribu know wolfs, but small changes (or not so small) in the eco-system can make huge differences...

Very neat report. These are lovely animals--truly a delight to see in the wild.
 
Probably Canadian caribou, not respecting international boundaries! :wink:
