A mother and 10 month old were killed Monday in the Yukon while the husband was out on the trapline. He was attacked when he returned and shot the bear only to find his wife and daughter dead.

What a tragedy! An ignorant question...When do the grizzlies hibernate or do they go in and out of hibernation?

Most of the local bears should be denned up by now, especially gravida sows and well-nourished boars. We've had a relatively mild winter so far. So long as snow is not deep, older bears (especially boars) may continue feeding until mid- to late-November. Occasionally, we can witness "ice bears," older, poorly nourished bears that can't put on enough fat to ensure successful hibernation. You can cut tracks on occasion during the dead of winter.

Mighty scary. I figure always carrying a big bore rifle or handgun might be in order most of the time then!
