Today's walk was only about a mile and a half... But oh so fun!

Maverick's first pheasant hunt. He did well. I stacked the odds in his favor by hunting at the Cooke Canyon Hunt Club - so these are not wild birds. But we found eight pheasant, brought home five, and had a wonderful time. He hasn't had a lot of actual hunt training, but did a wonderful job of finding and pointing the birds, then retrieving them for me. He's not to blame for the pheasants that I didn't hit. Sigh...

I think we're going to have a wonderful time hunting together for many years. I sure hope so.

Regards, Guy

He certainly looks eager as he eyes that bird. Good work, Guy.

Thanks all. He was so danged excited.

The photos were taken after we were done, about 30 yards from where the Jeep was parked. I took one bird over to the grassy area along with the dog. Left the shotgun safely unloaded and in the Jeep.

Getting him calm enough to hold still briefly for a couple of cell phone photos took some patience! He was all squirming & jumping and bouncing around. So proud of himself!

On the drive home, he napped the whole way. Completely spent, mentally & physically. He discovered his new love yesterday - hunting birds! Now it's making sense to him.

I'm proud of the little rascal.

Little? He's up to about 65 pounds now, was about 53 when we got him a few months ago. We walk almost every day and he's put on some muscle!

Ya know - I think this explains why I wasn't all that excited about deer hunting this season. I was working with the dog a lot, trying to get to this point, where we could hunt together.

It was a hoot! (y)

Great experience and he heared his calling!
My Münsterländer retrieved a winged duck with 10 months from a cold lake and loved bird-hunting ever after. She even tries to follow them, when they are diving...

Guy- that is fantastic! Just something special about hunting behind a dog (so they tell me). Glad that he is coming into his own for you. Hopefully, more learning and many years of enjoyment to come for both of you. CL

Glad you and your new dog are bonding and he loves to hunt. Hope it's just the start of many more fun times together. Dan.
