I lined up 6 one gallon water jugs. Set at 50 yrds, bullet exploded jugs 1 and 2 went through
3 and stopped in 4.
Exp. dia. .536 and wght. 108.0 grs.

Should I stay with this bullet or move up to 150's for WT's?

I don't doubt that the 130 grain Speer FN will drop whitetails within reasonable ranges. I'm old school, and thus prefer heavy for calibre. However, that doesn't mean that you are undergunned for whitetail with that load. Consequently, that is good expansion and weight retention. You ploughed through what would qualify as the body of a buck with a broadside shot.

Nice recovery.
If it were me, I would use the 170 gr SPCL and not look back. The 30-30 claimed its fame with the 170 gr bullet and it has put millions of pounds in the freezer.

That is great performance. I like the 170's in the 30-30, but seeing how well that did, I wouldn't bother messing around with it. That'll hammer deer.

I don't think you can go wrong with any of the Speer offerings suitable for the 30-30WCF, as far as white-tail go. The one caution I'd place on any bullet in the 30-30 is to know where you drop below 1000lbs of energy. That's my floor for a deer bullet, and with my 150gr load, it's right at 200yds (actually, around 198yds, to be exact) but I figure that's well enough for a 200yd gun. By my calculations on the "best case 2500fps" 130gr load, that bullet is running 1000lbs of energy out to about 190-195yds, and is pushing 990+ at 200yds. If you slow it down a bit to 2400fps, it still carries 1000 out to 160yds. The 150gr will carry 1k a bit better, though no 30-30 bullet is carrying it out beyond about 200yds in a 20" barrel. I can't speak to any velocity gains with the new Leverevolution powder as I haven't tried it, but I get 2335fps with 748 and 150gr Speers as is. That's just my opinion on the subject, take it for what it is.

That bullet did very well and should work fine, the Hornady 180 gr tested in a 300 WM recently here didn't do nearly so well.

Dub, I get 2300 with the 170gr Speer DC outta my 20" barrel 30-30 with Leverevolution. Haven't taken squat with that rifle. Heck, I haven't even hunted it yet. I have a feeling it would work nicely though. I just love to carry that M94. It just feels right and 170 with iron sights is really about a 100 yard rifle for me anyhow.

Scotty, at 2300fps, you should just get a good hunting peep sight and practice out to 200yds. Couldn't be much more difficult than qualifying with the open sights on your service rifle, right? And a 170gr @2300 is carrying 1000lbs out to 270. Heck, you could sight in in with a PBR of 220yds and be all set. Might be time to get another Win94 or dump the 4x off the top of mine...nah! I like that little rifle just the way it is. Besides, recent developments have put a nice, open sighted rifle in my safe. More on that later...

That is the way mine is set up.

Just a little Williams 5D on it. I love to shoot it, but my son likes it way more! He shoots the heck out of it. It is a very accurate little rifle.

Wanna hear what the new lever gun is Dubs!!! Don't hold out on us!

Ooooooh...it's not a lever gun...

Scotty, that's a great setup. Nice 94, my friend.
