After seeing the tests from last weekend, my son wanted in on the action  He wanted to test his British .303, so here`s the low down...

The shot was @ 15yds, and the bullet came to rest in the 4th jug. The bullet was traveling @ about 2700fps, and finished @48.5 grs. It lost it`s core which we couldn`t find anywhere?

P.S, I know this isn`t a .308 but there is no section for .303 so........

I have been shooting both the 150 gr Speer spitzer and 180 gr RN in my 303 using IMR 3031 with excellent accuracy especially considering how pitted the bore is. Thanks for doing the test, one day I'll do the 180 gr Speer RN and post it up. In a few weeks time a young fellow I know hopes to put one of those into a black bear. Hopefully you can figure out why your pics won't work so we can see how it looks :)

It is surprising how well the 150`s shoot. These were rounds my dad loaded in 1986 using IMR 4895. When I reload these cases I will have to give the IMR 3031 a try.

Good luck to the young fellow, I`m looking forward to success pic`s..

Well that's shocking. I guess we could make some jokes about a hot core. I'm actually very surprised by this. I thought that was a much better bullet.

It is surprising how well the old Lee Enfirelds can shoot, I assume your son's is also one. The IMR 3031 loads are pretty mild not too much more than a 30-30 and the young guy can shoot quite a few at one time before his shoulder gets sore. The 150's I have are also older stock bought from a guy on HuntingBC along with some older RCBS dies but the 180 RN's are made recently I wonder if the newer ones will hold on to their cores better. Certainly the bullet you recovered would have killed a deer easily even if it lost it's core.

Hodgdon has some data, they didn't use Speer bullets but working up to their charges wasn't a problem in this case.

The .311 diameter, 150 grain bullets are .221 sectional density which I guess explains the lower water jug penetration, plus the load is mild as well for velocity. It should kill a deer as well as a 150 grain .30-30 though.
