Problem with grouping

I don't have a chrono, and here are some results. I shoot Howa 308 Bull barrel. Loaded Norma cases with 42.2gr S335 Somchem powder, inserted PMP primer with 155gr Nosler Custom Competition.

I would like to know if there is a way to better my grouping without the use of a Chronograph

Welcome aboard. Always glad to see new people posting. First off, the second group displayed is not bad. It shows some promise. Perhaps you just need to play with seating depth. With cup-and-core bullets, such as the Nosler CC, I find that seating as near the lands as possible yields the best accuracy. This assumes that you are able to fit the case into the magazine or that you are comfortable single loading if the style of shooting is punching paper. Do you know how far off the lands you are seating the bullets?

A rough estimate using QL suggests that you have room to increase velocity, which often increases accuracy as you approximate maximum pressure. The following is using CIP standards for the .308.

SAAMI standards will increase velocity and maximum chamber pressure slightly. The point is that you actually have some room to attempt to increase powder charge.

I'd just add that a chronograph is absolutely NOT needed to develop accurate loads. Many excellent loads were achieved long before the advent of affordable chronographs.

They are good tools though, for any handloader.

That 155 gr bullet is a very good performer in the .308 Winchester, and your groups do show promise!

A chronograph is not really needed to find a load for your rifle, but I prefer it to check ES / SD and speed. You can check your manuals and select a load in between min and max, work up with 3 round groups in .4 increments up to max. I would say that H4895, Varget and IMR 4064 are great powders for the .308

You can try to use your powder, just work up and watch pressure. See below on my work ups across the paper with Varget and IMR 4064 until I found a node for both. Good luck.

I believe your brass is OK but I would use components that were known to be accurate in the .308. The 2 powders you should be working with are H-4895 and Varget. The primers I've had good luck with are Fed 210 and WLR. I don't see any difference on paper in GM210M and the 210 But use the primer that fits your case best. You need to be able to feel your primer seat and seat them all the same. I haven't found Nosler 155 or 168 Competition bullets to be very accurate in some rifles and found the Nosler BT to be more accurate. So you may want to try some. I would seat your bullets .010" or less from the lands and forget about seating depth unless they won't fit your mag. I would start with a charge in the middle of starting load to max, load 10 rounds, go to the range and fire two 5 shot groups. Record the measured groups, increase the powder charge 1 grain and do the same thing over again till the accuracy falls off or you reach max charge. When you hit on a good load seating depth won't make much difference and 1 grain in powder charge won't either. It takes a bit of trial and era to find what your rifle likes .

from what I gather you don't have to many choices in South Africa as far as powders go? To be honest you shouldn't have to venture to far. I see S341 is a medium ball, I think that may suit you better. However, Dr. Mike suggested messing around with cartridge bullet over all length may do the trick, pressure spikes is what I see with the "fliers". A heavy barrel shouldn't be that picky especially being a Howa, but is possible. I had a extra heavy bull barrel that needed the bullet to be jammed into the rifling to group tight, not good, due to the primer pockets came loose. Long story short, I should have continued my research, as I was new to the handloading world, and found out what could have been done to get better results. Partial FL sizing cases bumping shoulder back .001 to whatever you need, normally .002-003, in my case .005 for one rifle. I just didn't like the bolt being a little too stiff at the norm that I read about .001-.002., OAL, neck turning, loaded cartridge bullet runout, I use a Forster/Bonanza Bench Rest seating die, really nice dies. I found them on ebay, cheap. You won't find them retail right now.

I set up my RCBS FL die like a Forster... floated the decapper expander, and raised the expander to support the neck during expanding. I use motor oil and found it to be the most consistent lube to ease the case during sizing. You'll need some tools to tweek your handloading procedures. Hornady OAL bullet/OAL tool, and thier Head Space gauge. Neck turning isn't as neccesary as some may say in my experience, but I do it to eliminate the possibility. Last but not least the shooter, which I should have mentioned first but, oh well.
 
Welcome to the forum.
I would first make sure the bore is clean and void of any copper fouling.
Second, I would adjust the seating depth. As Mike mentioned, start close to the lands. .010-.015" off the lands would be a good starting point. Keep seating a 1/4 turn, which is approximately .005" deeper. You should be able to walk the group in.
You might also want to shoot 3 shot groups.
3 shots test the load, 5 shots test the shooter.

When I started load development with my .308 rem Tactical, I had similar results. It didn't make much difference which powder I used, or seating depth the results were the same. My groups were OK but not what one would expect. I tried several different powders and Lapua, Remington, Lake City Match, and Nosler cases but could not get consistency. It now shoots nickel sized groups with WW, cases, one of the cheapest cases available. Don't give up you will find the magic combination.
 
Umm IdahoCTD.... I just found out last year the right powder with the right bullet weight...researching, for my 06, not really batting an eye about certain powders for certain bullet weights rather than calibers. The Redfeild accutrac scope BDC got me on the right path. I've been loading for 19 years.
