I'm just curious about what the big attraction is to the 170s for the 30-30. Asides from the obvious heavier bullets equal deeper penetration.

The reason I ask is because I have noticed on the back of federal fusion's box, the 170s are going faster and carrying more energy beyond 200 yards. I'm actually considering the switch to be honest. But is there a 170 gr bonded available for reloading?

The 170 nosler Partition is a great tough bullet. In all honesty all the 170gr bullets designed for the 30-30 are pretty good. I use a peep sighted Winchester so the extra velocity from the 150s doesn’t help me any.

Considering the size of Alaskan game the extra mass is a bonus.

Well found out something amusing. The 170gr federal fusion's shoot almost exactly 4" lower than my 125 gr handloads. Windage is exactly the same. So it's nice to know my scope adjustments for the two loads. But my 30-30 likes the 125 more. With my iron sights, there's no adjustments needed for the 170's. They were set for 150 gr. Ammo.

That's one of the great things about the 30-30...loads have been perfected for over a century.

I've used 150 and 170gr...couldn't tell the difference on the animals and POI shift was pretty minimal at 30-30 ranges.
