What to do with a 700 action?

Poking around the pawn shop while waiting for my grandson's school to let out, and came across a new 700 long action. C.M., blued with the X-mark pro trigger. (2nd gen that's externally adjustable) at a decent price, so I started the paperwork and went back and picked it up after I picked him up from school...I had all sorts of ideas, but what I keep coming back to is building a 284 Win long action. I already have a long action Magpul 700 Hunter stock with DBM bottom/magwell I was going to use another M700 that I ended up swapping. Open to other ideas, but a 284 Win has really wormed its way to the top of my list.

Man, the options are endless really...

The 284 Win is as good as any in my book and with Lapua 6.5x284 brass out there it makes it a first class choice in my book. Ain't found a 7mm I haven't liked yet.

Some other ideas would be the 338-284, or similar if you don't have a bigger caliber in your safe.

I have actually been thinking about a 6-06 a bit lately. But a 6-284 would be about the same deal. Lotsa good bullets out there for the 6mm's these days.

I build, customize and reload my rifles for a specific purpose and hunting plan.

So...Where's the hole or niche for this rifle for you?

Since its already a long action why limit yourself to the 284 other than nostalgia. if its a 7mm bore you want then I would say 280AI.

The 284 Win is a great round. Mine is built on a long action Winchester. It does absolutely nothing than my 280s won't do, but I do enjoy the fact that it isn't common in these parts. And it does deliver some amazingly small groups. That'd be a great build for you, without a doubt.

I would agree.

The 284 Win is meant for a short action. Unless your point is to have a lot of spare room for long bullets, I'd go with 280AI.

.284 was the original short-fat. Very efficient cartridge in terms of powder burned vs. velocity achieved. They are reputed to have a tendency for feeding issues due to the rebated rim but it’s something that can be solved. Generally not a big deal with a Rem 700. A long action is a good way to go, a short action limits you to SAAMI OAL which wastes a whole lot of room for powder in the case. Call Dave Manson at Manson Precision Reamers and he can set you up with a reamer throated properly for using ELD or any other VLD bullets in your long action.

Cool project. I’ve been half tempted myself. Let us know what you decide.

I noticed that with my 6mm Rem project. I wish it had a longer magazine and action, as it could easily handle more powder. When loaded to SAAMI/magazine length they are short!

My 700 Classic 257 Roberts, which I gave to my daughter, is on a long action. The COL is 2.900" for the load I have with the 115 gr BT and it's basically a 25-06 performance wise. So yeah, I agree with you about the advantages of the long action.

Thanks guys..I already a Kimber 280 Ackley and a savage 6.5-284..you’re correct, I did thinking about the long bullets for the long action.

I don't remember where I saw it, but somebody, maybe PTG, is selling a 284 win reamer specifically for using resized Lapua brass. Think they called it a "284 Win Match" chamber

HaHa, I'd have bet my lunch money that your suggestion would have been to swap it for a M70 Fwt donor and start from there...... :lol: :lol:

Yeah did my 284 win on a long action last year. 28” McGowen precision Sendero profile with a Mac Gunworks break. 700 stainless long action, magpul Hunter stock , Vortex HST 6-24 scope. Had the chamber custom throated for 180 VLD through 197 SMK’s . The 197’s load out with a COL of 3.393”. Awesome rifle. About 2,875 FPS with 180,s . 2,725 with 197 SMK’s.

The other cartridge is a 270 win with a 170 Berger. I made the same way 26” McGowen precision no break. 1-8 twist . Spits out 170 Berger at 2930 FPS.

Don’t let the fancy website fool you. Kiff himself is an excellent toolmaker, I believe he learned at JGS, but I’m not sure there’s any adult supervision at that place...sorry to digress.

Nice looking rig! The Magpul Hunter stock I have is OD green, and the scope I have laying here I thought I'd put on it is a Viper 6.5-20x50

All my builds are Remage barrels . I have and OD Green 338 win mag 26” Sendero 1-10 twist Mac Gunworks Brake. It has a Burris XTR 2. 5 x26 Mil scrib on it. It spits out 250 gr Bergers at 2,860 FPS. I have the sickness.
