Looking to buy my wife her first shotgun. Only problem is that she's such a small stature that its hard to find a dependable weapon that she can handle. Most of my guns are too big. The models I have are Mossberg maverick 88, Mossberg 935 , Remington model 11, all of which are too long because of the stock and placement of the fore grips. Bout the only gun she fits is my new England pardoner. Few requirements, 12 gauge and pump action at a minimum. 12 gauge youth models are VERY limited and even harder to find in store. Id like to ask, what reccomendations would you have for that type of shotgun, so i can take her out and try to fit her to one of these weapons. Any and all advice is welcomed! Thanks in advance!

I tried to sell her in 20ga but she was unsure. She's never shit anything but 410 bore and 12ga. She doesn't care that its just as lethal for a home defense weapon. But shes also thinking in terms of using it as a hunting weapon as well. I wouldnt mind having that same gun you're selling though !!

The 20ga is a great upland game gun. The nice thing about the affinity is they sell a youth stock that's adjustable for LOP

If you hunt waterfowl, stick with the 12. Lighter loads are available for target shooting, similar in recoil and performance to 20 ga loads. If no waterfowl, there is no reason not to grab a 20.

Consider the used market. A rem 870 with the shorter barrel (I believe it was 24" on the one I got my brother in law when he was young) or Ithaca M37 featherlight would be a good bet. Aftermarket butt stocks with shorter length of pull are available.

I saw quite a few Benelli ultra light 20 ga. Guns last year. Mostly in the hands of women. They are not inexpensive but the ladies that had them absolutely loved them. One gal was 4'11 weighed about 90 pounds. She was deadly with it when she could see over the grass.

That's what I keep telling her about the 20ga. She won't consider it until she has shot one herself. So looks like I need to get her to the range at some point with a 20ga of some sort.

The used market is my primary market. Guns are like cars, way over priced and are much cheaper used. I can't tell you the number of guns I have purchased used for a KILLER deal with a great gun.

I'd agree on the 20ga. My daughter-in-law started grabbing my Benelli Performance Shop Super Sport in a 20. It's easy to carry and shoots like a dream.

Ok, I know that your post specifies a 12ga and a pump; have you taken a look at some of the Turkish shotguns such as the Escort line? I recently purchased one for home defense/hunting in 20ga so the wife would warm up to it. It comes in 20 and 12ga, semi-auto but is also available as a pump. A suggestion if you looked at a Mossberg 500 or 590 or 590A1, try the Magpul stock furniture as it will adjust the length of pull (significantly). Happy hunting!

Mossberg versions were too heavy for her to shoulder comfortably for more than a second. We are still looking but in all honesty, its gonna be awhile before she can shoot. Shes preggers again. [FEARFUL FACE]

Congratulations I think are in order but there are precautionary measures to keep it from happening again.

Hahaha Yeaaah. Unfortunately that will result in a Friday afternoon procedure for me. Good times.

yep fifteen minutes and done. No worries for the rest of your adult life.

Congratulations on the new family addition. I can attest to the 15 minute procedure, it works! As far as the shotgun for home defense for your wife take a look at the " Hatsan Escort (Gladius) in 20ga. It is a very fast cycling 20ga. I currently own one and it is fast, accurate with slugs and recoil is similar to an AR15....yea I like it. It will not beat your shoulder up. My last range session I sent 100 slugs down range; zero malfunctions, all rounds indie of 5in. at 50yards, and best of all no brushing or pain. Don't feel that because it is a 20ga it can't do the trick, I for one would not want to stand in front of one regardless of the loading. Good luck and happy parenting!

Congratulations are in order! You need to take her to a good shotgun store. Jays in Michigan probably has over 100 on the wall. The three B's, Winchester, Remington stoeger franchi. Etc.
for my wife. I'd only consider a Auto or Over/under. The Autos are light and easy recoiling. The O/Us weighing a bit more swing better and have the weight to absorb the recoil. Mosberg has an oU at the 600 point. I would go crazy on skeet/ trap or clays as field guns won't stand up to the regular pounding of 100-200 rounds at the gun club weekly. Autos pretty much will. The three Bs in an OU you can't go wrong, but you'll drop some coin. Really, her number 1 criteria should be her ablilty to shoulder and mount it well. You might have to go to a fitter. Shortening the stock changes the balance point. I have 2 of 6 shoot guns that disappear in your hands. Weight balance is so exceptional everyone thinks the are super light weight. The OU has 32" barrels and comes in at eight around 9 #. The other is light 6#, but the Benelli performance shop tuned it. You'd want one tuned after it fits her. I wish my wife would hunt with me. She will target shoot.

Most importantly! Congratulations of another blessing in your life!

Thanks all!! Appreciate it. Strangely enough we looked at an escort by Hatsan 12 ga about a week ago. We didnt buy it because I knew nothing about the manufacturer. May have to revisit that avenue soon!

Get a youth model M500, or a M870, in 20 ga.

There is absolutely ZERO difference in how hard a 20ga and a 12ga hit the game. It's simply about the number of shot that flies out the end of the barrel and that can be overcome by A) practice &/or B) 3" shells.

Just my $0.02

You don't mention the intended use of the shotgun.

20 is plenty for any upland shooting. If bought for waterfowl or defensive use the 12 likely makes better sense. You might consider looking at the Syrene line. Shotgun fit is likely the most important element of shooting one well.
