Back to the range with 30-06 and RL26

It was a FULL case of powder, but no problems seating the bullet. I didn’t use a drop tube, but I poured each load slowly from the pan, and it settled slightly into the neck. When I poured it faster it settled closer to the center of the neck.

Thanks, I may give it a try.

Excellent! That's 300 H&H speed there! In the early 90's I had a douglas barreled '06, 23" that went 2910 with the Hornady Light Magnum 180 and 2970 with the Federal High Energy 180 Partition loads. I killed a big cow elk with the Hornady LMs (before I had tested the Federals) Anything over 2700 fps with a 180/'06 is excellent!

Great results on both fronts! Impressive speed for sure with a 22" barrel and the accuracy of the load, gun, and shooter is commendable.

I just shot some 180 BT's with RL26 in Hornady brass, also with CCI 200's and seated to 3.34" in a 22" barrel. I got:

62.5- 2818
63.0- 2830
63.5- 2836
64.0- 2873
64.5- 2879

I'm attributing my slower speeds to the fact that this Hornady brass has a hair more case capacity than Winchester. Even 64.5 grains was just getting up towards the bottom of the neck. Three of those five shots would have been well under MOA. I might try to go a little higher. But I might also load up a set at 63 and see if 2830ish will group well.

64-64.5 looks pretty good to. That’s hauling some mail.

I am going to have to give rl26 a try. I am wanting to work up a load but will have to seat the 180 gr AccuBond a hair deeper for my ruger hawkeye. I have to keep oal to 3.32. What's a good starting load using hornady brass? I'm not looking for max velocity but my initial goal was to get 2700+ fps which should be easy to get after seeing your loads.

2875fps out of a 22” barrel with 180 Accubonds is more than impressive. I’m going to load up some more to test out in different conditions over time.

To be clear, is this load 62.5 or is it 63.5 ?
Looks like a everything a guy could ask for.

Thanks

I guess I need to revisit Reloader-26 in the 30-06.I tried it with 165gr Ballistic Tips and was not overly impressed getting 2860fps with 64.0grs and 2898fps with 65.0grs.That was out of a 26" barrel.Looking at the data above, the 180gr bullet is what I should be using with that powder.I have a 30-06 with a 28" barrel that gives me a little over 2900fps with 180gr Ballistic Tip using Ramshot Big Game.I'm going to have to try the Reloader 26 with the 180gr in that rifle.

Forgive my ignorance but is reloader26 a newer powder? I don't recall seeing it in any of my reloading books.

My 3006 with a 24 inch barrel gets about 2775 fps with 62 gr. Max charge of r22 with the 180 AccuBond. So you squeaked out 100 fps more with a 2 inch shorter barrel with r26. Not bad. I might have to give that a try.

Where did you find load charts for the 3006 with r 26? I checked their website and they don't have a recipe for 3006 with r 26

Load data at Alliant powders or call (866) 286-7436.

That is a great load. Be hard to beat that one for sure!

WOW!!
For an “Old” .30-06, 180 gr bullet load, that sure is cooking!
Great accuracy, too!
I’ll have to load me up some for mine now.

Took my 28" PacNor barreled 30-06 to the range today to try the Reloader 26 loads. This thing is a beast with the 28" barrel. The 63.5gr load of Reloader26 with a 180gr AccuBond clocked at 2992fps on my Magnetospeed and I tried 61.0grs of Reloader26 with a 200gr AccuBond and it clocked at 2815fps.Wow,great groups too.
Winchester Brass
WLRM Primer
Reloader 26 Powder
63.5grs with 180gr
61.0grs with 200gr

Well, the accuracy is there, for sure. And there is nothing wrong with those velocities. It appears that you have considerable leniency in charge weights with that bullet. That will work well on about anything you might wish to hunt in NA.

If you can get results like that there’s not much more experimenting needed.
Looks very good.

My word! With groups and speed like that, I can't see a need for much else! Congratulations!

Yeah I’d just go ahead and call that load done [emoji16]. I wouldn’t even try any other loads, I just put that back in the safe and wait on hunting season! That’s a great load man, and would prolly cover everything in North America.

Pretty amazing numbers from a 30-06. And accurate along with it! Great load with both bullets.
