I know we rifle cranks have many.... BUT.....What is your absolute favorite elk gun? How is it set up optically? What load with what bullet?

Here is my absolute favorite.
WBY (imagine that!) MK V Krieger Custom Rifle in 30-378. Nightforce NX8 2.5x20x50mm scope

Shoots phenomenally well with 175 LRX !

That's a hard choice for me now, that I have my Browning A-bolt II in .300 Win Mag, and my Winchester Classic Sporter in 7mm Rem Mag.
My .300 Winnie has a Bushnell Trophy 3-9x40mm scope. My 7mm Remmie has the Burris Fullfield II Ballistic Reticle, 4-12x42mm.
In my .300, I would shoot a 180 gr Nosler Partition. The 7mm 175 gr Sierra Gameking BTSP.
Then again, I just might use my Marlin 444, with a Burris Fullfield II 1.75-5x20mm, with a 300 gr WFLN Gas Check.

I have to defer. Haven’t had an elk hunt yet. My Model70 ews with a Steiner GS3 is the best I have (300Win) and it’s my intention to harvest an Elk, Moose, and speed goat with it.

That 30-378Wby is a well set up Monster!

Fotis, any reason not the 338-378Wby?

Should I ever get the chance to go again It will Be my M70 338 Win 210gr Nosler PT Burris FF E1
and the M70 35 Whelen Imp 200gr AB Meopta 3-10 will back it up.

My 35 Whelen is my go to now. I also have an old Mk V Fibermark in 300 Wthby.

Blaser R8 in 300 Weatherby Magnum. 168 TTSX's. Leupold VX-6 2-12.

VERY LOUD BANG. flop.

Elk have eluded me in all my out of States hunts to SD WY MT ID CO AK and Canada on all my DIY hunts I hunts I have been 100% successful except Elk and yet to fire my rifle at one Elk. I have had the pleasure to carry some out on some hunts just not mine.
I’m going to try again in Colorado this year so since I don’t seem to get a shot should I take my 300 H&H or -264 Win Mag or save the weight and take the 6mm Rem since it lighter ?
It is very hard to go hunt Elk in the Mountains in country you have never seen and just when you seem to find a area with Animals it’s time to come home. But if I did not think I had a chance I would not go but with success rates in over the counter success rates around 15% oh well.
Some day I have to go to MT or WY for Elk.

My very favorite was my Remington 700 with a Shilen Match barrel, McMillan A2 Stock topped with a Leupold 6.5-20x40. Shooting hand loads with 180gr Combined Technology Ballistic Silvertips. At 18.5 lbs I finally decided to go with something lighter.

Elk Gun 01.jpg

My newest elk gun is my Nosler Model 48 Long Range, Manners MCS-T kevlar Stock, with a Nightforce ATACR- 5-25x56mm. Shilen Match barrel, Accuracy 1st Anti-Cant scope level & a Bradley Adjustable cheek rest. Currently using 180gr AccuBonds.

Elk Gun 02.jpg

Both rigs have Timney Triggers.

Fav Elk Rifle .... When I'm getting serious about filling the tag I carry my Sako 85 Finnlight in 300WSM. A Swaro sits on top. Before the 85, I carried a Sako 75 in 270WSM and these two guns just fit so well. I can shoot the Finnlights with out much effort. I'm suprised I don't have a pic at all of the 85 - oh well.

Another vote for 35 Whelen. Perfect for woods hunting to 300 yards. My favorite.

Just an ole 30-06. Sako 85 with a 3-10x42 Swarovski, going to shoot 165gr accubonds this year i think.

Mine is a 20" barreled 300 win mag Weatherby Vanguard with a carbilite stock. It has killed most of my last several Elk, a few deer and bear.

Would have to be my custom LH Sako AV in 7MM STW with a Leupold VX III 4.5-14x40 B&C. (5 elk)

Have also used successfully on elk over the years:
- Win Model 70 270 Wby
- Rem Model 7600 35 Whelen
- Rem Model 700 Classic 6.5x55
- Rem Model 700 LSS 7mm Rem Mag
- Rem LH Model 700 BDL 338 Win Mag (2)
- Browning BLR 358 Win (4) - Second favourite
- Custom LH Rem 700 300 WSM (3)
- Custom LH Ruger 376 Steyr
- Custom LH Rem 700 280 Rem

and 1 elk with an Excalibur crossbow

Win Model 70 Featherweight 300 WSM with a Leupold VX-6 2-12. Shooting a 180g AB over near max load of RL17.

My first elk was shot with a 308 Baer, the next 5 with a 358STA, then 5 with a 375-358STA, and the next 4 with a .416 Rem and one each with a 7STW and 338 Baer. After that I shot a dozen or so with Rem 700ML and Remington Genesis .50 cal muzzleloaders. Then it was 3 with a 6.5-300wm, 2 with a 6.5×47, 1 with a 7-300wm, and the last 13 were with 2 300wsm's and a 300wm. My 300wm is probably my current favorite. Its a Gunwerks GRB action, with a Christensen carbon barrel, and AG stock with a Leupold VX6 4x24. I do have a 300 Norma Imp in the works for this year. It will be Terminus Helios action, Proof Carbon barrel, and a McMillan Game Warden stock.

Do you have your own cold house for all that meat?
Impressive list!

I put this together specifically for my 'Elk' rifle. It's a Ruger American Wolf (digital camo stock), re-bored to .338 Fed. Topped with a Leupold 2X7X32 Duplex, and running Nosler 200gr AB's with a full charge of LVR. Weighs in just over 7 1/2 lbs, fully loaded !

Two favorite Elk rifles at this point in time. My model 700 in .338RUM, MacMillan stock with either 225 grain Sierra pro hunters or Nosler 225 partitions. My scope has been and will remain my Zeiss 1.5 X6 Diavari. Haven't needed more power and it is the brightest and sharpest scope I own. The 2nd Rifle is a Christensen Arms Ridgeline in .300WM with a Kahles 3X9 scope. Both rifles shoot under two inches at 200 yards.

Another +1 for the Whelen, though I have yet to connect on an elk with it. In my opinion it is a cartridge that simply does not get the respect it deserves in the wider world.

Mine is a stock 700 Classic, with an inexpensive 4-12 Nikon with built in BDC. Load and bullet are either a max charge RL15 with 250 grain Partition or (more frequently) Speer. For smaller critters I do love what the 180 grain Hot Cor FP will do out of that rifle.

In fact, this will be by deer rifle this season with the 180 grain load above.

I do have one for...moose? My 338-378 is going for moose this year BTW
