My newest elk gun is my Nosler Model 48 Long Range, Manners MCS-T kevlar Stock, with a Nightforce ATACR- 5-25x56mm. Shilen Match barrel, Accuracy 1st Anti-Cant scope level & a Bradley Adjustable cheek rest. Currently using 180gr AccuBonds.



Both rigs have Timney Triggers.

300 Win mag or????

My all time favorite is my Winchester Post 64, 300 WM. Bought it and started hunting with it in 1970. It is very accurate and still consistently a 1/2 MOA rifle. I have killed more elk and deer with it, than any other rifle i own. It is also my heaviest rifle so I am trying to move away with something lighter. With the help of one of my friends my wife bought me a Kimber 280 AI, which will hopefully be my new favorite rifle, for christmas in 2018. I was unable to close the deal last year and did not get an elk. I have also hunted and killed deer and elk with an 22-50, 06, 7mm Mag, 7mm Mashburn, 300 B, 50 Cal MZ and probably a couple of more that I have forgotten.

Gosh, I've only shot two elk...

One nice bull with a 7mm Rem Mag, Rem 700 ADL, 3-9x Leupold, handloaded 175 grain Nosler Partition loaded to about 2900 fps:


And one big cow with a 30-06 Rem 700 CDL, 6x Leupold, handloaded 165 grain Nosler. I used the Ballistic Tip with satisfaction, but believe that the 165 Nosler Partition or AccuBond would have been a better choice:




I must have liked the 30-06 Rem 700 more, 'cause I still have it while the 7mm Rem 700 ADL was sold years ago. Both are good general-purpose hunting rifles, and that's all I need for elk hunting, or almost anything else. :grin:

BTW - I have hunted elk quite a few times, with no shot opportunity. On those trips I've carried a variety of rifles:

45/70 Marlin 1895, 2.5x Leupold, handloaded 405 grain Remington JSP bullets

375 H&H Ruger Number One, 1.5-5x Leupold, handloaded 260 grain Nosler AccuBond bullets

Several different 300 magnums over the years.

25-06 Rem 700 CDL, 6x, and the 115 gr Nosler Partitions at nearly 3200 fps.

And, this year I'm seeking to fill my elk tag via a bow. I tried that last year too. I haven't met with success with the bow yet, but I'm trying.

Oops ... Looks like I left out some info ... The Rem 700 build is 30-06 and the Nosler Model 48 is in .30 Nosler.

I took my very first elk with a .50 cal muzzle loader I built from a kit decades ago. Never intended to take Elk with it, just wanted to build one for fun. After a few seasons I upgraded to a TC .54 cal. & then decided to just hunt with Modern Firearms vs Black Powder.

I’ve killed elk with each of the following calibers/loads:

.243 Winchester - 100 grain Corelokt
.25-06 Remington - 120 grain Corelokt
7mm Rem Mag - 150 grain Ballistic Tip
.300 Savage - 150 grain Powerpoint
.308 Winchester - 180 grain Corelokt
.30-06 Springfield - 165 grain (AB,PT)
.300 Win Mag - 180 grain Partition
8mm Rem Mag - 220 grain Gameking
.338 Lapua Mag - 270 grain ELDX

For the type of country I usually hunt elk in, mixed cover and open country, one can shoot over 300 yards at times if so desired. However the vast majority are taken inside of 300 yards here. So for me it’s my .30-06 with 165 grain Accubonds or Partitions. My Model 70 Classic Stainless has a 24” barrel and sports a Leupold 2.5-8x32 Vari-X III scope with the duplex reticle.

For a dedicated long range elk hammer (shooting consistently past 300+ yards) I will happily concede that the 8mm or .338 Magnums with a high magnification scope are the way to go.

For shots under 150 yards in the brush any of the above in an appropriate rifle will do just fine. But I find I grab one of my Savage 99 rifles (.300 or .308) with 150 grain Corelokts and merrily hit the hills. The .300 has a Weaver K2.5x and the .308 a Leupold M8-4x.

Me too. It and the .25-06 are hardly “elk” rifles but can do the job if one doesn’t get stupid.

Just gimme a .30-06, then there are no worries.

Remington 700 custom 338 Remington Ultra Mag

My one and only elk I took with Win M70 Stainless Classic BOSS in 30.06 shooting factory 180 grain ammo. It was a last minute hunt and that was the only rifle I had ready to go. If I were to go again, my WBY MK V 300 WBY MAG is on the ready with 200 grn AB. Working on loads for M70 Stainless Classic BOSS in 338 WIN MAG (210 or 225 grn) and WBY MK V 338 LM 250grn-300 grn. Have not decided yet.

Killed my last eight elk with TC Omega 50 cal, 300 grain nosler MZs, it's by far my favorite elk rifle, scratches, broken front sight post, somehow there's permanent mud stains on the stock, reminds me of the mountains every time I pull it out of the safe. It looks like hell but the bore is spotless, several dudes have already asked to have it when I die...before that I used my dad's ruger number 1A light sporter in 30-06 with 165 grain partitions, never had a problem making meat and a sweet old rig to carry.

Give me any 7/30/33 caliber magnum for elk and they're all my favorite. With that said, I like and prefer the 7s. I've always shot them a little better, plus it still holds my longest elk kill at 1125 yards with the lowly 7 RM and 162g AMAX at 2950fps. I now have a 7-300 Win Mag with 180g ELDMs at 3000fps.

I have several freezer but I give away a bunch of it to friends and family too. I just like to hunt A LOT and I'm quite successful killing elk. This might be my first year in a long time I'll only have one elk tag. I didn't draw in UT, WY, or ID for extra cow and they sold out the non-resident tags before the residents get to buy them this year. We might do a OTC hunt in CO if we can make it happen.

For me it depends on the likely distance I’ll shoot.

0 - 300 Yards, Meters, or whatever is the 45-70.

0 - 600 Yards, Meters, or whatever is the 338 Win Mag.

Building a 6.5 Grendel but won’t use it on elk. Just deer, antelope, and coyotes out to 500 Whatevers.

I have taken a number of Elk with my Model 700 CDL in 270win it had a Leuy VX-7 on top and using a 130gr. Partition bullet or a 130gr AB.
I have taken one with my Custom RMR in 280AI with a VX-6 on top, using 150gr ABLR over top of RL22 at just over 3250fps. This Elk was just under 300 yards facing away and was walking back into the bush when I place the reticle on the back of his head hit him right at the base of the skull and he took a very quick dirt nap :wink:.
I have also taken 2 with my Custom RMR in the 35 Whelen with a 4-14 X 42mm Leica on top I have changed that scope to a Zeiss Diavari 3-9 X 36mm using 225gr. ABs over top of RL15.
I will be using my 35 Whelen when in the stand for the evening and in the mornings I will be shooting my 280AI.

Mine is an Oberndorf Mauser custom I picked up at a gun show. Caliber .35 Whelen. Load runs the 225 gr. Barnes TSX at 2710 FPS with about the same trajectory as a 180 gr. bullet from a 30-06. What's not to like?

I have twins model 700 in 338 rum, both have nightforce shv 5.5x20x50. Both shooting 225 Nosler AccuBond around 3050 to 3075. Both are lefty’s. Had one and when another rose it’s head I couldn’t say no. Will see if they can earn their keep come Halloween.
