I'm fairly new to using QL. Still learning. My question may be less about the software itself, but I'm confused about some of the results I'm getting.

The cartridge I'm running is a 6.5-300 Weatherby Magnum with 142 grain Nosler AccuBond Long-Range.

I confirmed with Hodgdon that Hodgdon H50BMG is ADI AR 2218. ADI in Australia manufactures it and Hodgdon distributes it as H50BMG, BUT...

When I run the Propellant Table in QL, the results are different. I've noticed with propellants that are the same product, but under different names, such as Reloder 17 and Elcho 17, the figures are identical in the Propellant Table, but with ADI AR 2218 and H50BMG, they're different. With a maximum pressure of 65,000 psi, QL shows the max charge of AR 2218 as 86.2 grains and a case fill percentage as 99.0% and a predicted muzzle velocity of 3,364 FPS with a 26" barrel. Then down the list it shows H50BMG a max charge of 85.9, a fill percentage of 103.5 and a predicted MV of 3,247 FPS. What has me perplexed is, not the velocity difference so much. The rep at Hodgon explained that as variances between lots, but the charge weight differences versus the case fill percentages. It shows a higher weight charge for the AR 2218, but a lower fill percentage. Chemical composition variances between lots is a possible explanation of the difference in predicted velocities, but doesn't explain how a heavier charge occupies a lower amount of volume (86.2 grains/99% vs. 85.9 grains/103.5%). Chemical variations between lots isn't going to change space and volume with all else being equal if they're the same product under different labels. If they're the same powder, how is a 86.2 grain charge going to occupy less space than a, 85.9 grain charge? If someone could help me understand this, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Excellent question. I've never actually run into this observation to this point. I can only assume that the test materials supplied to Mr. Bromel were different--the one shipped directly from Australia and the other shipped from the USA.

From the ADI website:

ADI export a range of propellant to the US market where they are rebranded by Hodgdon Powder Company. We share reloading data and technical information with Hodgdon, which helps keep our products at the cutting edge of performance and quality, also the sizeable volumes of Aussie-made powder we export to the US help keep local manufacture economically viable.

AR2217 H1000

AR2218 H50BMG

While the propellant shipped to the US is equivalent, there is no official recognition that it is identical. However, I do note and in QL that AR 2225 and Retumbo align, as do AR 2217 and H1000. So, it is somewhat mystifying, and I would only be guessing as to the reason for this particular disparity.

I appreciate any help you can offer, even if it doesn't solve the problem.

The information I'm finding is quite bothersome. Looking at Hodgdon's and ADI's reloading data for this load, there are large variations in what I'm getting from QL.

As I stated previously, it's not only the velocity variation, but more worrisome is the disparity between the volume and pressure predictions. Hodgdon's and ADI's load data show a maximum charge of 90.0 grains of both propellants and a pressure of 62,400 psi, and a MV of 3,193. Let me state, I understand perfectly well about variables and variations from one rifle to another, that none of the information provided is absolute, that much of this is theoretical, that one needs to work up loads in their rifle, I get all of that, but I would expect the load data from the manufacturer would be based on actual testing and there would not be such a huge disparity between what QL predicts and what the reloading manuals are saying. Look at what QL shows if you loaded 90.0 grains of AR 2218 or H50BMG. QL predicts a peak pressure of 77,100 psi (versus 62,400 psi by the manufacturer data, a huge difference) with a 90.0 grain charge of AR 2218 and a peak pressure of 77,202 psi with a 90.0 charge of H50BMG. QL shows a predicted MV of 3,455 FPS with AR 2218 and 3,352 (a difference of 103 FPS) with H50BMG. Again, what is most concerning is the difference in what QL shows for the fill percentage with the 2. QL says a 90.0 grain charge of AR 2218 will occupy 103.4% of the available case capacity and 108.5% with a 90.0 grain charge of H50BMG. All of this with equal parameters between all 3 sources. Same, C.O.A.L., barrel length, et cetera.

Note the starting loads shown in the ADI and Hodgdon data. Their starting load is 84.5 grains, which would yield a MV of 3,013 FPS and a peak pressure of 53,200. QL predicts a peak pressure of 60,418 psi with a 84.5 grain charge and a MV of 3,208 FPS. With a 84.5 grain charge of H50BMG, QL predicts a peak pressure of 61,332 (8,132 psi difference from manufacturer data) and a MV of 3,106 FPS. That's already near PMax of 65,000 psi for that cartridge.

Throw in the published velocity ratings of Weatherby Select Plus Ammunition (they don't offer anything with this bullet, but do with a 140 grain AccuBond and a 140 grain A-Frame) of 3,300-3,395 FPS, I'm thinking that QL is closer to reality. The predicted velocities out of QL are pretty close to the factory ammunition velocity ratings (although Weatherby uses a 26" barrel) whereas Hodgdon's and ADI's listed velocities are a couple of hundred FPS different.

Something is terribly wrong here and this is becoming my White Whale.

I have two wildcat cartridges that are just necked down versions of cartridges in the QuickLoad list. After I change the bore diameter and set the other case dominations how do I save it as it's own separate cartridge?

Would anyone be able to run this one that show the list of powders, I want to see which ones give the most velocity?

I'm in need of some 224 Valkyre QL data using IMR 8208 in a 20" 1/6.5 twist launching 80 gr. Berger VLD bullets at magazine length.
Much appreciated.
John

Thanks Mike. I have the final piece of information to compare QL and GRT to the actual data from my rifle.

Not just for @Ridgerunner665, but for others that have good working knowledge of QL? If Nosler and a few others use this for data why doesn't it align with inputs from their data to my QL? Some are WAY OP! Some show different fill % by 5% or more difference? I understand you can change case volume in the program and I've never checked what any of my cases were? Even though I've had this program for maybe 5 years it's still new to me! Starting pressure which might be ignition (primer) start? I can check powder density and adjust for that, but that only changes volume, not burn in which affects pressure. I've watched some videos about making adjustments on QL to meet known data, but different primers make different results if that's starting pressure? WELL, that's way too much typing for me and now feel like I'm on a dating app............................................
