2.5oz of #9 TSS is a big load. I just completed my gauge slam on turkeys. 410-28-20-16-12. I used #10 TSS in my .410 and it smashed the tom at 34 yards. I get 250 hits with #9.5 out of my 28ga at 40 yards. I'm a fan of TSS for turkeys. My favorite load is my 16ga. 1 7/8oz of #9 puts 330...
I have another update on dad's 700. I got a call a few minutes ago from Douglas saying the rifle is ready to ship. Unfortunately, dad will not get to see the results of the work. Dad passed away late last week with me, my sister and my mom at his side. In the last two months, dad was home 6...
I shot 5 rounds tonight. The first one was to the left 1.75" but the next 4 created a 1.100" group at 50 yards with a 4x scope. Recoil was not bad. That was with 53 gr of IMR3031. I might back it down to 52gr and see what happens. I'm hoping the first one to the left was due to it being the...
Thanks for all the info. I do have the Lee Factory Crimp die and use it for the 45-70. I loaded up a new batch last night and dropped down to 53gr of IMR 3031. From what I have read, it should be around 1700-1800fps. I know the bullet is strong. I think it will be like a lead cast bullet...
I just got some 350 Hot Cors and want to try them with IMR 3031 in my Henry. Looking at the Hodgeden Site they say 56.5gr is min/2022fps and 60.0c is max/2135fps, so I loaded 5 up at 57.0gr and now I'm questioning if they are safe?? With 57.0gr, there was some compression of the powder and I'm...
22" 1:9 twist. I saw that the package arrived on the USPS site and 1 hour later they called to let me know they had the rifle and it all looked good. I think I will be happy with the results.
Thanks for the kind words. Dad is a great guy but a nasty disease that affects everyone around him...
A little update on Dad's 700 30-06. It has been a crazy 6 weeks and we have a long road ahead of us. My dad was taken to the hospital with alcohol DT and is on the road to coming home. After 4 weeks, he was able to talk clearly and have conversations with the family. One of the conversations...
I think the issue is with the brake. The smith had to bore it out before he put it on. From my measurements, he only went .005-.008 over bore. I did some reading and most brakes are .015-.020" over bore size.
I have a Sako 300WBY that I haven't shot much in the past due to the recoil. Last summer, I had a local smith put a brake on it for me and the recoil is very easy to handle. With the mild winter, I have been working on finding a good load but it was been a nightmare. I've tried 2 scope, 2...
I'm trying to come up with a list of barrel makers who will also install their barrels. So far I have Douglas and Hells Canyon. Any others I should look into? I'm thinking about putting a new barrel on my dad's Rem 700 mnt rifle. I would like to keep it 30-06 and roughly the same contour and...
One more question. Should I shoot it at a closer range to find the best load and then practice out to 50/75/100 yards? Is doing load work at 25 yards too close?
I really appreciate all the info. I'm going to keep shooting it and messing with it. I really do enjoy firing it at the range and want to shoot a deer with it really bad.
I have the Oregon Trail Laser Cast bullets.
I'm with you guys, the data varies so much it is hard to decide on what charges to start with. I'm seeing a trend with this thread, that most guys get to a point where recoil is the limiting factor. I don't want to be punished either, but I will...
