.25-06 Remington performance 22" Barrel vs 24" Barrel

Yesterday I put a Stevens .25-06 on lay a way. Currently the only rifle I own is a DPMS 16" Oracle .223 that I use for work and calling Coyotes. For that it is working quite well. However it is not what I would call an ideal Deer Rifle or Cartridge. I had thought about just buying another upper receiver assembly in a cartridge more suited for Deer Hunting but stumbled onto this Stevens .25-06.

I have had and hunted with several different cartridges / calibers over the past 36 years but have never had a .25-06. Most all of the data I see for the .25-06 is for 24" Barrels. This particular Stevens .25-06 has a 22" Barrel. Now I fully realize that velocity isn't everything and that accuracy is far more important as is the particular bullet used.

I am just wondering if anyone is shooting a .25-06 from a 22" Barrel and what you favorite loads are and their velocities.

Thanks

Larry

Never had a 25-06 without a 24" tube personally.

That said I doubt you will ever see any difference.

I would anticipate about 25-70 fps differential in the two barrel lengths.

I don't think you'll notice too awful much. I wouldn't be scared of a 25-06 with a 22" barrel. Bet you could still run 115 PT's or BT's over 3000 without any drama.

I want my next 25-06 to have a 26" tube. That's just me. The 22" tube should be more than OK at traditional hunting distances.

I have a 22" Shilen barrel on my Mauser 98 in .25-06. Last weekend I finally had a chance to chrono the loads. 115gr Berger Hunting VLD at 2950fps.

A 22" barrel is fine but a 24" barrel is better.

And who sells one besides the BVss Savage 116 or sendero?

I would really be excited to see Nosler put out an ABLR for the .257's. I could see me really liking one of those in a 25-06. Not that we don't have good bullets, but the 25-06 is a cool round. Justa very pleasant rifle to shoot with good HP to boot..

I`m running a max charge of R22 under a 117gr Hornady Innerlock/115NBT @ about 3100 out of a 22" factory Savage barrel. I also have shot a max charge of R22 with 100NBT @ around 3300fps out of it. All of these loads were sub moa and all bullets were moly`d.

A 22' tube is just fine for hunting IMHO.

I have a Marlin XL7 25-06 with a 22" barrel and it's a great carry and treestand rifle.
If using a 25-06 for a longer range plains rifle a 24" would be my choice.
It just depends on the intended duty of the gun.
Either way it's a wonderful chambering.
Just load it what it shoots the best and go with it.
Mine likes 54gr. of H4831 behind 115gr. Berger HVLDs for 3050 fps.

I can't imagine it would make much difference in the field between the two.

I`m just starting to work with this powder to replace my R22 loads because I can find any R22. It`s encouraging that you are having such success with it.

work up a load for some 110 Ab's or a BT and let her rock. The Deer will never know the difference. The 25-06 has a rep like Thor's Hammer on deer (as you probably alreadt know). CL

Thanks again guys. I'll more than likely start with 115gr. Ballistic Tips as I shoot mainly ballistic tips in other cartridges. You guys have given me lots of ideas on powder also. Thanks again.

Larry

Larry, I think you're going to like that 115 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip.

I've found them to be very accurate from my .25-06, and very effective on game. Last year was the first time I took game with the 115 Ballistic Tips. Two instant, one-shot kills:

Mule deer buck @ 260 yards, hit in the chest, but farther back than I'd intended. Instant drop & death.

Pronghorn antelope @ 160 yards, it in the chest. Instant drop & death.

Both bullets exited too. And accurate? Oh yeah...

Best of luck! Guy
