My 15 year old son dumped a nice 6x8 bull elk in Wyoming during the fall of 2007. His .300 WSM was having trouble so he ended up hunting with my .270 WSM loaded with 130 grain AccuBond bullets. We found 8 bulls late in the morning feeding on the far side of a large meadow. After an hour and a half of soft occational cow and calf calls the bulls made their way up the meadow to where my son could take a shot. His first shot hit the largest bull in the left hind quarter (he's going to need to work a little harder so that doesn't happen again). The second shot missed all together and the third shot connected behind the right front shoulder. We checked the bull over pretty good and couldn't find any exit wounds, but we couldn't find any bullet remains inside the elk either. Regardless, the vitals had been scrambled by the AccuBond which resulted in a quick kill. This was my son's first big game animal so I didn't want to take his moment away by dwelling on the hind-end shot. As you can imagine he was pretty excited.

I'm not sure how to post photos on this forum. If someone can tell me how to do it I'll post a couple of pics you can look at.

Congratulations to your son
What a great first animal to get. Some people (me included) hunted many, many, many years to get a bull. YAHOO!!!

Good Hunting
Elkhunt

Congrats to your son for a job well done. As for shooting it in the hind quarters, I know a few guys that have been hunt for decades and still gut shoot or hit the hind quarters. As for you, good on you for not dwelling on that one bad shot, I can only imagine what your boy was feeling and going through with that bull in his cross-hairs. I know I'd be shaking like a 7.0 earthquake was happening.

It will happen too the best of us from time to time, and we make a bad shot. Hopefully you and your son have since discussed the shot since the hunt is over. Congradulate your son for me, taking a bull of that class is a dream of mine.

Great job. That sure must of been great to enjoy that moment with your son. I cant wait to tech my 2 boys (26months and 6 months) but I dont want them to grow up too fast.

I sure am impressed with the performance of the 270WSM with 140gr Accubonds. My main and only rifle was my 300WM until I bought a 270WSM...now I have 2 b/c my wife shoots the first one. The performance on elk, moose, bears, deer is second to none.

CONGRATS again to a great hunt with alot of memories with a great bull!
