Trying to find a load that shoots decent with 145 gr. Speer Grand slam bullets , I realize this is a Nosler forum but there seems to be a wealth of knowledge here and was hoping someone might clue me in on seating depth and differnt powders that perform well with this cartridge .Have played with RL19 and imr 4350 also some Imr 4831, the best I can get it to shoot so far is 1 1/2 3shot groups .

With the 145 grain GS, I've had good success in years past with the very powders you've already tried: IME 4831, IMR 4350 and RL 19. I would be inclined to focus on which powder gave me the lowest standard deviation and play with seating depth to find harmonics for your rifle. I generally treated the Grand Slam as a standard cup-and-core bullet, seating about 0.010 inch off the lands. My .280s have given me very good to excellent accuracy. A sleeper powder to look at might be A4350.

Thank you Dr. Mike I don't have a conograph to see deviations in my loads .But can tell ya IMR 4350 has given me my best results so far with bullets being seated just touching lands .

My 280 loved 140 grain accubonds and 58 grains of RL19. .Bullets just barely touching the lands. Shot one hole and was in the 3190 to 3200FPS range. Now I have rebarreled to a 280AI hoping to get the same or better.

Those powders listed have all shot very well for me with 140 gr bullets.
In fact, 57.0 grs RL19 shot well under MOA in three different 280 Rem rifles.
Have you checked the bedding and action screws torque spec?

J d I'm shooting a t/c encore with syn stock hinge pin is tight realy don't think its the gun .

Roger. Try 57.0 grs RL19 with a 140 gr BT and seat the bullet
.015" off the lands.Seat deeper in .005" increments until you find
the accuracy node.

Has any one tried R L 17 in there 280 rem. ?

I get excellent accuracy (0.5 MOA) and good velocity (3035 +/- 10 fps) with RL17 and 139 grain GMX. I have shot nothing with this load because I settled on the 150 ABLR and VN560 for my hunting load.

JD 338 I can get the b.t. too shoot well under and inch with 55 grains R.L. 19 but really like the grand slam and wanted to get perform At least a inch group at 100yd. Dr.Mike what was your load with RL 17 ?

Your rifle may not like the Grand Slam bullet. The 140 gr PT might be the answer. It also shot well under MOA with RL 19.

IMR-4831 is my goto powder with 140 gr BT and 140 gr Barnes TTSX in my 280 Rem.

And an excellent powder it is in that capacity. I've used a lot of IMR 4831 with 140 grain bullets; it always performed well for me.

I found it took JD338 advise and started messing with seating depth bumped up the powder to 56 grains of RL19 and a seating depth of 3.360 2 different groups 3/4 inch was one and another at 7/8 .Thanks to all for your input !!!! I'm happy

What powder do you like for heavier bullets in the 280 Dr. Mike? I got a box of 150 gr PT to try and thought about starting with IMR-4350.

IMR4831for 140gr bullets and IMR7828ssc for 150gr and above. The Grand Slam is a flat base bullet. You might try a boattail to see if your rifle is picky about bullet design. I've had a few rifles show a preference one way or the other, including a .243 that hated 100gr bullets of any style, but loved the 90gr Hot-Core and not the 85gr boattail, go figure.

Great, glad to help. Try going to 57.0 grs. I'm betting that you can get even better accuracy.

I have had great success with WMR and WXR. I laid in a supply when Winchester ceased marketing these, but the lack of availability precludes using them for most people today. Thus, I've used R905 (which I managed to snag when it was available briefly here in Canada). Again, Rottweil powders are not generally available in NA, so that is usually a "no go." Thus, I finally get to commonly available powders.

I've had good success with IMR 4350 and H 100 V. I've had even better results on heavier bullets with RL19, VN165 and W760. More recently, I've focused on VN560 and VN165, either of which give me excellent accuracy and fine accuracy with 150 grain bullets.
