45 ACP Pet Loads

I am going to start loading for my Kimber 45 ACP. I want a target/practice load with the 230 gr FMJ that would be around 800 fps.

I also want a clean burning powder such as Universal Clays, Titegroup, or WST.

What are you fellas loading in your 45 ACPs?

Are you shooting jacketed or lead?

My load is 7 grains of Power Pistol under a 230 grain XTP...I use that load for CCW, deer hunting, plinking, and targets.

Its not a "mild" load...830 fps from the 4.25 inch barrel on my 1911, but very accurate and powerful. I like to practice with what I use everyday.

The hotter you load Power Pistol...the cleaner it burns.
 
As for cleanliness, I don't remember. It's been a while since I shot it. The bullet I use is 200SWC (lead), but Alliant shows 5gns as max for the GD(something) 230gn Speer.
 
Win 231 is by far the cleanest powder I have ever tried. Burning rate is similar to Bullseye. BTW Power pistol is all I use now.

I have great luck with 5.5gr of Win 231, I load 185gr SWC, 200gr RNFP, and 230gr TMJ with it.
Shoot fairly clean and great accuracy and control
 
JD, I'm running 5.3 - 5.4 grns of 231 with the 230 grain ball round in my 4" Pro carry and find that accuracy is very good and powder burn is exceptionally clean. I've also used 6.0 grains of universal clays and found that to be exceptionally clean. Both loads function the slide with a 22lb spring.
 
I have yet to figure out a way of excluding the obviously ridiculous powder options for handgun loads....Example rl 25 for the 45 ACP :shock: :shock: :shock: :shock: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol:
 
If you want clean, I`d try either VV-n320 or n340 with n340 being a bit slower and likely easier to achive your target velocity with. I use n320 with 200 gr LSWC for target and it is amazing how clean burning it is. N340 works great for 185 gr defence loads and is similar to PowerPistol in burn rate. I haven`t loaded a 230 gr in some time and never with either of these VV powders. PowerPistol is a very good choice though for the 230, but dirtier then the VV powders.

I have never tried Universal Clays, but have heard it is a very clean burning powder in the acp from quite a few shooters. You might take a look at, it if price or availablity of the VV powders is a concern.

Does QL show any data for W231 with a 230 gr FMJ?

I ran 5.1 grs and 5.4 grs W 231 with 230 gr W-W FMJ through the Kimber with out a hitch. Both shot very well and very clean.
I will run them through the Ohler 35 once the snow is gone and let you know that velocity I am getting through the 4" barrel.

I think I used W231 also when I loaded a bunch of LSWCs a long time ago. I say I think, because I have a Dillon Border Shift ammo bag that was full, and I have not needed to load any more.

Guess I need to shoot more .45 auto.
