Tikka 6.5x55 Swede, R22, 140 Accubonds, QL?

I’m new at developing loads, and I know R26 is a better match with this bullet but I have 8# of RL22. 8 years ago I loaded 46.5 g of R22 (max load with Nosler data) and got 2605fps. I’d like to take advantage of my modern rifle, but unsure how far to push pressure. 58,000 psi? 60,000? Where do folks see pressure signs? Also unsure how much powder I can reasonably stuff into a Lapua case. Would appreciate hearing some insights; I’m gathering I should be able to reach 2800-2850. Thanks for the help

Welcome to the forum @mpstan I'm sure someone will be able to run the numbers for you. We have a 6.5x55 and it is a sweet cartridge. Never tried RL 22 since it's so hard to find here but I do believe you can safely get more than 2600 fps. It has more capacity than the 6.5 Creedmoor and even our 260 Rem which can get over 2700 fps safely.

Interesting the small gains at the higher pressures, I would have expected more, particularly going from 58,000 to 65,000psi. Maybe 70fps which is literally nothing in the real world for hunting or targets, but I bet the brass feels it.
 
I’ve been loading my 70 Swede to what Jim showed around the 60-63k PSI mark for quite awhile, using 26. I also used some 7828 and 22 back before I swapped over to 26. It’ll easily get 2800 with loads that can be fired numerous times if not forever in Hornady or Lapua brass.

I agree, the jump from what the data shows from 58-65k isn’t huge and I don’t shoot for max pressure only the spot where these slow burning powders give tight numbers and good uniformity.
 
This year I used a Hornady 140gr SST (sorry Nosler) 47.5grs RL22 Fed 210 in my Tikka T3X Hunter STFL best groups were 0.306. SB6.5 46.5grs did 2731 fps 0.6480 group size. Saving my RL26 for a 270 Win Nosler 150gr BT project. Dan.

1. I found it interesting that all of the table data suggests 46.5g of R22 would produce close to 2605 fps, which is exactly what I've recorded with my rifle.
2. It appears that the definition of "Dangerous Load" pressure is different when the 4 pressure scenarios are illustrated; not sure why

I just checked one of my primed, sized Lapua cases: it holds 55g all the way to the top, and 50g at the bottom of the neck.

From here I'm thinking of doing a pressure ladder from 46.5g to 50.0g, and stop if I'm seeing pressure signs. If I see a "velocity node", go with a load in the middle of that node? Or do another ladder surrounding that node with 5 shot groups to determine accurate load?

your plan sounds good to me . the 60000PSI chart shows 50.2 gr of powder is at 104 % case fill . that's a nice comfortable working fill . I try to stay at or under 105% . use a powder funnel with a drop tube ,and pour the powder slow . this will help settle the powder , you'll be surprised how this helps . you can work the powder node either way . a lot of mine I load in the middle of the node , and they seem to shoot well , especially for a couple hundred yard hunting rifle . depending on what you want , you can always try tweaking the powder up a little , and down a little to see if it gets better . let us know how it turns out . watch for pressure and have fun .
