That sounds like a good powder, it's on the short list of powders I will test next whenever I get around to tweaking this load further. If this next range trip proves consistent velocity and sub-MOA 5-shot groups I'll be sticking with it for this year's deer season.
I finally got another round of testing in today. I decided to take the best performing powder charge from last session - 48.0 gr H4831SC - and experiment with some longer jumps to the lands. Those of you who said Accubonds like a .050" jump were right on the money. I had 3 COAL's at this charge...
I read a few pages! I can see where a .223 would be enough to kill an elk with the right bullet at close range, but you better make the first shot count. Elk can run very far if they aren't perfectly hit on the first shot, even with larger more powerful cartridges that are normally considered...
That's awesome to hear that it is effective on big game. My daughter is 14 now and that might be a good round to start her on for deer hunting, maybe she could shoot a doe during the youth hunt or something. I do have a 6.5x55SE and I was planning to work up a mild load with 100 or 125 gr...
Thanks Ernie! I even have the Remington 7.5 primers on-hand so all I need are the bullets. Should be quite close to the MK262 rounds (I think that's what they called them). That's a cool pistol, it reminds me of a certain golf course scene in Matt Bracken's book "Foreign Enemies and Traitors"...
Sure, I would appreciate it! I was thinking a heavier bullet, like the 60 grain Nosler BT Varmint would shoot really well from my 1:7" twist barrel. When I was testing various factory match ammo in this rifle it liked the Black Hills 77 grain Match Hollow Point ammo the best out of what I tried...
I had previously worked up a decent load with 55 grain Nosler Varmint Ballistic Tips and 25 gr of Varget for hunting coyotes out to 250 yds. I still have a lot of Varget but I either need to pickup more of the Noslers or try something else. I was going to tinker around with seating depths to see...
My friend at church was just telling me how one year he traded a Glock and some levergun for a brand new Browning BAR MK II Safari in 30-06. He said he gave it to his wife for Sweetest Day lol! I guess she didn't like it so he sold it to a gun store. He said he already had one like it in 7mm Rem...
That's interesting, I guess if I can get RL19 or RL22 I'll be happy to try those out. When I took this rifle on an Arizona bull elk hunt in unit 4A in 2009 I wanted to try RL22 with some 160 grain Woodleigh's Weldcore .264" bullets I had got. I ended up using Viht N160 and I got good accuracy...
I don't know what my pressures were but at that 48.8 grain load the bolt lift was noticeably more resistance. In the past I have had loads that were way too hot and I had to strike the bolt handle with the palm of my hand to get it to open. This is nothing like that, but it was starting to get...
I was thinking about trying Stabal6.5. I was looking at Norma MRP too, but I don't know if that is commonly available anywhere. I would probably see if I could get ahold of some Viht N560 as well. Thanks for the good feedback about the Stabal6.5, I will be sure to add it to my list. It looks...
I'm trying to work up a good load with the 140 gr NABs and H4831SC, my hoped-for goal was sub-MOA @ 2800 FPS or better with safe pressure in my rifle. The Nosler book stops at 47.0 gr but with some well-calibrated Quickload data (and max PSI set to 60K) and careful observation for overpressure...
I run Quickload in an Oracle Virtualbox VM with Windows 7 on it just for running QL (network turned off). I used to be able to use WINE on my Linux box to get QL working but for some reason I was not able to get it working again after reloading my workstation with a newer version of Linux Mint...
I'll never sell this one, I got really lucky with "Ingrid"!
At the time I was waffling between 25-06 and 6.5x55SE. The two things that made me choose the Swede were the availability of long, heavy bullets and (at the time) surplus ammo in battle packs that was cheap for plinking.
I think the...
I'm in Pinckney, just south of Howell/Brighton area. I usually go to either Peacemakers in Howell or Huron Valley Guns in New Hudson. Peacemakers expanded their reloading section significantly and they have the 4831SC for $53/lb.
DrMike: I love this CZ 550 American. I bought it for $450 in...
