I've shot the 140 GK in my 7-08 for several years and they work really well at 7-08 velocities with minimal meat loss. Ive never had any desire to shoot 140 gr GK's in a 7 mag due the velocity design limitations with the GK bullet, especially at closer ranges. I shot either 150, 154 or 160 gr...
I've got thousands upon thousands of primers, Hornady and Sierra bullets out the wazoo, and all the IMR-4895, 7828, 4831, H414, Big Game, powder that I could ever use. I could use a few pounds of Varget. The ONLY thing I know I'll be buying, outside of some Varget, is a few hundred of the Nosler...
I don't own one now but have owned several 270's over the years and was partial to 150 gr bullets and RL-22, of course I did use my share both versions of 4831 though.
I normally do not make it a habit to load for anyone without the rifle in hand but I got roped into loading for a friend of a friends 7-08 many years ago. Without the rifle I knew it would be tough but knowing this person wasn't expecting light speed velocity nor atomic clock accuracy, I helped...
I'll probably buy a box to try in my 7-08. Found them at Midway for 26 bucks. I wonder if they are a little bit "tougher" than the 140 Sierra GK's. The GK is a great bullet but can be just a tad soft, depending!
I understand that some wonky things can happen to bullets at closer range when encountering bone but I'm curious as to what caliber this bullet happened to be?
I used Partitions for many years and for the most part I always had good accuracy and success with Partitions. I know that bullet cost is the least expensive part of any hunt but I have quit using them. Regardless of my accuracy with Partitions I only get to hunt deer and hogs and with my type...
My old RCBS Powder Pro scales have been ticking right along since 2000. I couldn't justify spending that sort of money. On another note, my old Powder Pro's were made by PACT right here in the USA. Who manufactures the new scales??
I have used the 154 and 139 gr SST bullet for several years now and have killed 20-25 deer with them with most shots within 65 yds and have not experienced any of what you described here but isn't it great that we have choices.
Ive never used the 162's but have used the 139 a little bit and they shot good, can't remember the numbers but I like the 154's the best. I use the 139 SST in my 7-08 from time to time. Find yourself an accurate load, with good speed, within the design parameters of the bullet and just go kill...
