In my rifle 180 Accubonds and RL26 work good and gets about 2860 FPS. It also shoots 180 Sierras good. With the Sierras something interesting happened. A cow elk was facing me at 450 yards and I held a little to high. Bullet hit neck bone and exited and re-hit elk in back strap and penetrated...
I have a Rem 700 chambered in 300 Win Mag that has a long throated 26 inch Douglas barrel. With the 180 grain Partition the OAL is 3.6 inches. With IMR 7828 that rifle 3150 FPS and good accuracy.
I also have a tang safety Ruger chambered in 280 Remington. IMR 7828 powder and 160 grain...
I got my Ruger tang safety 7X57 probably around 1974-75. This rifle took several deer [5-6] a few antelope and 2 elk all with the Hornady 154 grain bullet and IMR 4350 powder. It is a fine hunting rifle. It's not a real accurate rifle which I think was typical of lots of those "tangers".

I can sure recommend the 154 Hornady and IMR 4350. It's really done well in my rifle. I have a "tanger" like yours that I bought probably around 1974-75. It's never shot small groups with anything that I remember. Those early Rugers were sort of hit and miss I think.
One year I was hunting elk...
The 154 Hornady's and IMR 4350 works good in my old Ruger tang safety 7x57. It has accounted for many deer, a few antelope and 2 elk. It just works.

I still have several boxes of 52 grain 22 cal solid bases. My 220 Swift shoot them into very small groups. Also in a long gone 25/06 the 120 solid bases were great. That rifle and bullet killed 2 elk.

For the last 2 years I have been shooting a QL suggestion that was worked up on this forum. The load is 63.8 grains RL 26 and the 180 Accubond. Rifle is a stock Rem 700 with a 22 inch barrel and the velocity 2861 FPS. This load has killed 1 cow elk at a range of 453 yards. One shot one kill...
I shoot mostly 160 grain Partitions for hunting and 162 SSTs for off season just shooting at rocks.
Some time ago, maybe in October or so Dr Mike did a quick load work up for the 280 that was very interesting. There is very good information on that post.

I have been lurking around here for several years and finally joined the group.
I have a 300 that has a 26 inch long throated Douglas barrel and when a 180 Partition is seated with an OAL of 3.6 inches the bullet's base is at the juncture of the shoulder/neck. This barrel was installed back in...
