I've been shooting IHMSA matches for 8 or 9 yrs I guess. It's no where near the popularity it was back in the 80's but there's still a few clubs around that have matches. It's a great way to hone your accuracy skills especially if you're interested in hunting with a handgun.
Deer hunting for 8 yr olds is about as light hearted a discussion as there is. Had I known responding was akin to taking a position on the matter or 300 yrd drop charts I wouldn't have responded. The fact that you're spending the time to take your kids hunting is all that matters. Cartridge...
I'm in the same boat with a daughter about hunting age. If you're looking at a TCU/BR case also consider the 7mm versions. A 7TCU/BR in a compact rifle with a 120gr ballistic tip over H322 is comparable to a 7-30 Waters pistol which is highly thought of in handgun hunting circles.
Granted the Encore and G2 aren't setting the world on fire these days but there were boatloads of Contenders sold during the heyday of IHMSA which was an extremely popular sport during the 80's. Warren Center started off building guns in his basement, I'd guess a 50 yr (and counting) run on the...
Almost of my wildcatting has been for specialty pistols where there really aren't factory options for the application.
Beyond that, if I'm going to do a wildcat I try to be pragmatic about it. I see guys at the range sometimes spend big money and time doing some off the wall cartridge that's...
I've never shot bullets backwards, never had a need to. Honestly, with various wildcats I've gotten better results in getting cases to fill out the chamber using false shoulders than jamming bullets. So I personally wouldn't fool with backwards bullets.
As for the false shoulder I'd at least...
I'm not an expert but have reloaded for a few Contender/Encore pistol barrels. Several dozen at least. It gets repeated so often on the internet now it's starting to become gospel but as I was taught early on by some long time IHMSA shooters and has since been my experience too, don't fiddle...
As some of the others mentioned, sure sounds like a difference in neck tension. I'd get some 750 Tempilaq and get the annealing process under control. Recovery annealing will maintain your brass at more or less the same state as when it was new. Full annealing is excessive and undesirable IMHO...
Just my opinion of course but a K31 isn't the type of action I'd try to up the velocities too much with. It's not a weak action per se but it's not the strongest either so I've always just stuck with the book and left it at that. With that steel butt plate that's plenty
FWIW it's a 1-8.75 twist and at least according to the calculators even with LRAB it's well into the stability range. Even the big Berger 180 VLD's will stabilize with a 9t.
Edit...it is a great rifle. I had my heart set on an RSI but a deal popped up on this one. The dies aren't here yet but a...
I mostly shoot my K31 at the range with 168 gr Custom Comps. Very accurate. I had a stray box of Horn 150 gr BTSP's and worked up a hunting load for it but have never gotten around to taking it afield. I've hunted with a T38 Arisaka a few times though. There's something neat about hunting with...
I hear ya. The question was mostly about making sure they aren't too hard for deer at the modest velocities. I'm mostly a handgun hunter so it's probably just ingrained to worry about bullet construction being a good match for the velocity :).
Thinking about it more today, I already have a...
I just picked up a Ruger 1A in 7x57 and while waiting for dies to get here I'm looking at heavy bullets to load for it. Why? Because it's a 7x57 and if you're going to hunt with a classic in a single shot might as well go all the way and use the bullet weights it was designed for :). I have a...
