A little something followed me home from deer camp

Well...I carried the fowler a bit for deer, but no shots in range presented themselves. But here's why fowlers were so common historically... I pulled the ball off the powder charge and replaced it with a load of #5 shot on top of a nitro card, held in place with an overshot card. Smoked a...

Season ended with a bang and some smoke

I think I've gone well beyond "habit forming," lol. I have three custom long guns at this point, including that fowler I just picked up a month or so ago. I'm headed to the 18th Century Artisan Show in Lewisburg PA here later this week. Just more fuel for the addiction.... ;)...

35 Whelen project about to kick off......finally

Don't forget IMR4320, too. I get north of 2600fps for a 250PT in my M70 1:12 Whelen with a 24" barrel. The buck I shot this year with it...I heard that big honkin' bullet slap into him from 260 yards away. BangFWAAAAAAAAAAAP! It puts a goofy grin on your face.

Season ended with a bang and some smoke

Thank you DrMike! 105 is a good poke with a flintlock. And....added bonus...first deer with a ball I cast myself.

Season ended with a bang and some smoke

Took a medium sized (90lbs dressed) doe on Jan 23. 105 yard shot with the 62 rifle. She went about 75 yards and crashed. The ball went in mid-ribs and exited through (and breaking) the far leg. I didn't go out tonight, and tomorrow is the last day, with torrential rains forecast. Next...

A little something followed me home from deer camp

Went to deer camp in north central PA to hunt with the flintlock for a few days, and this 16ga Bucks County style fowler came home with me. Darndest thing I ever saw....I told the wife I made it sit and stay and then walked out of the cabin, but somehow it was in the truck when I got there...

    Flintlock Doe

Way to stick with it and wrap it up at the end. Congrats on the doe!

Antlerless Season Missouri and a Daughters first deer

Pat, you’re doing a great job with your girls. Glad you’re getting them out there hunting!

    Beat the buzzer!

Ouch, that's a tough way to end the season! I've generally had good luck in flintlock season. There's deer around, and often they're less jittery, too, than they are the last week of rifle season. I'll be headed up into 2G with a buddy to his camp for a few days of drives with the rock locks...

    Beat the buzzer!

He was very, very, very lean. Nearly no body fat at all. I'm hoping that means there's a lot of his offspring running around and will be running around in the spring. 158.9lbs dressed on my scale. They do get bigger here for body size than that, but I'm not gonna complain, lol.

    300 wsm brass question

What brand shell holders are you using? I vaguely recall having this issue when I first got my 300WSM years ago, and I think I had a Hornady or Lee shell holder. I currently use an RCBS shell holder for my press and have no issues.

    Beat the buzzer!

Yesterday (12/14/2019) was the closing day of our rifle season here in Pennsylvania. It's been a frustrating season. The deer have been moving fairly little, and I was constantly having "near misses" at opportunities. Archery season had been 10 weeks of that same frustration. I was, to be...

What are your favourite underrated cartridges?

257 Roberts...I shot my first deer with that round, and so did my daughter. 30-40 Krag (it doesn't do anything spectacular, I just love the Krag action) 300H&H....it does about exactly what a 300WSM does, but it's just cool. :)

Rifle Loony-ism is grabbing hold of me again

Then I gotta go look for them. Although the Whelen tends to make that simple. It's just so much more convenient when they plop.

Rifle Loony-ism is grabbing hold of me again

I also just sliced off two real battered whitetail shoulders at the hand of the 35 Whelen. I'm sure going faster with the 358 Norma will help mitigate the meat destruction.... yes? ;)
