7MM Rem Mag For Elk ?

If I was a smart man, I would’ve had a great rifle built 20 years ago in 7 Rem Mag, 1-8 twist, with a 3.6” mag box that weighs about 8lbs scoped with a 23-24” barrel.

That would’ve saved me a lot of money for tags and hunting. I would have been bored to tears but I would have never been lacking for anything I hunt anywhere.

I did the Mashburn about 10 years ago now and that’s an excellent cartridge but the difference isn’t enough to matter in reality.

I have watched the people at the LGS gun counters put new shooters and hunters, including women and youth, into the 300s (Win/WSM/Wby/RUM etc) for years, as that is what a lot of people say is required for elk.

I am of the opinion that most of those new shooters/hunters would have been better served with the 7mm Rem Mag. And to teach them how to hunt vs how to snipe.
Still adequate power for elk out to reasonable ranges (400 yards is still a long poke for many)...not everyone has to kill elk at 500+ yards...most are still killed within 300 yards (of my 20+ elk, one was at 475, and 2 over 200, all the rest less than 200 yards, from thick timber to large ag fields and open alpine)...and they aren't subjected to as much recoil with a good 150-160 gr bullet in the 7 as they are to a 180 gr bullet in the 300.

This means they will shoot it better, and enjoy the experience more!

My first rifle as an adult was a 7mm RM. I still have it and hunt with it, it has convincingly killed a number of elk as well as impala, reed buck, hartebeest, roan and zebra. All except one zebra were DRT with 160 A Frames or Nosler PTs. It is a timeless and very successful cartridge design.

You just described this one except for barrel length. It’s a X-Caliber 1:8, 26” barrel. I’ve switched to a steel magazine also. It gives a 3.7” OAL and tucks in tighter to the belly of the stock. I don’t like that the polymer magazines are longer, just my personal preference.

While I admit to an affection for a larger bore there’s no flies on the 7RM.
Load up, go hunt and good luck!

So I am having much consternation regarding a light weight rifle for Elk that would also be suitable for Mule deer. Shots on both, out to 400 yards but no farther. I like the Tikka T3x rifles and am eyeing the new ROUGHTECH with a 24 inch SS barrel and SS brake in 7mm Rem Mag. Curious if there are any serious elk hunters out there that would consider the 7MM Rem Mag shooting 160 grain Accubonds to be good elk medicine out to 400 yards?

The scoped Tikka would be just over 8 pounds so I am thinking this may be the set-up I am looking for but would appreciate feedback!

Thanks in advance.
I've taken over 25 Rosie bulls and a few Rocky mtn. With the 160's either AccuBond or partitions with a few 175 gr partitions thrown in. You won't have any issues. Federal 160gr Trophy bonded, either components for reloading or loaded ammo you will be golden!

I have both and love them both.
