300WSM nosler most accurate load from manual?

I have the Hornady 2 book set, 6th edition. They only list max loads, not accurate loads. They list Win 760 as the fastest, 69.1 grains at 3150 fps. I happen to use Win 760 at 68 grains pushing a 165 Speer BTSP at 3185 fps. The best group I've had so far has been .8". I also have the Lyman...

    Ballistic tips

The KID thinks he invented long range shooting. I was shooting groundhogs at 600 yards with a Remington 6mm heavy barrel before he was even born. Only thing was, I didn't have the luxury of a range finder as they hadn't been invented yet. We had to pace off our shots. But I wouldn't even...

    Ballistic tips

Ditto from me, Eagleye. I've got a 243 WSSM with a 6.5 -20 scope on it and I can hit a gong at 800 yds and beyond. I have a rangefinder AND a Chrony AND I have 45 years experience shooting AND hunting. But most importantly, I know the long range energy limits of my cartridges AND I know the...

    Ballistic tips

Richcale and Big Rifle Man, I totally agree with averything you both said. I've hunted and shot guns for twice as many years as he has been alive, yet he has twice the experience and knowledge that I have.

    Blackened cases

Thanks Gentlemen, Yes, I am very puzzled about the large variation in velocity. After cleaning, I squirt a shot of RemOil up into the chamber area. So a combination of that and thick necks on the brass cases could be causing the black. The black doesn't coat the cases uniformly, so it could...

    Blackened cases

Thanks 'JD338' and 'Eagleeye', Actually Hodgdon states 44 grains for a max Varget load. And Nosler states 42.5 grains. The Lyman 48th edition states "On average, moly coated bullets resulted in a three percent reduction in chamber pressure and a one to two percent reduction in velocity...

    Blackened cases

Went out to the range today intending on grouping some loads in 3 rifles. Raining, (yeah, in Arizona) so I decided to sight in the 3 rifles (because I switched some scope mounts around and added lock-tite) and call it a day. After firing 4 rounds in my 223 WSSM, I noticed the brass cases had...

    One gun for it all

None of the above. 270 WSM or 7mm WSM. With either you can go light bullet and LONG range for antelope - and heavy enough bullet for elk.

    150gr bullets

And if you are buying a 270, I recommend the 270 WSM.

    150gr bullets

Well, you didn't spell out any particulars, so I will assume you mean they have the same muzzle energy leaving the barrel at the same speed. Since MOST 270 cal 150 grain bullets have a higher BC than 30 cal 150 grain bullets, the 270 will maintain more speed down range - therefore more energy...

    25-06 troubles......

I bought one box (50) of Barnes 30 cal 165 TSX. The weight varied so much bullet to bullet that I have not loaded them. Anybody wanna buy them cheap?

What Calibers Are You Loading For?

    Barnes ? ?

No, I haven't. I am still developing loads - for 5 different rifles at the same time. (Gets confusing at times.) I would have to shoot 2 groups - one with bullets sorted to a specific weight and one with mixed weights. I must assume that when developing an accurate load, you should eliminate...

Model 70 Coyote in .223 WSM

I wish you would confine your negative comments to guns that you actually own - or at least have shot. I have a 'Wally World Special' Winchester Model 70 Super Shadow in 243 WSSM that shoots .5 MOA. And you should be careful about being willing to bet - someone just might take you up on it.

    Bullet spin rate too high?

I will be loading 50 grain V-Max moly coated bullets in my 223 WSSM which has a 1 in 10" twist in a 22" barrel. Speed will be 4000 FPS using 44 grains of Varget. This calculates out to 4800 revs per SECOND or 288000 RPM. Will I be 'over stabilizing' the bullet? Is there an optimum spin rate...

    Barnes ? ?

I load Hornady SSTs in 130 grain in my 270 WSM and 150 grain in my 30-06. I'm also loading 150 grain Noslet BTs in my 30-06 and 300 WSM. Both SSTs & BTs tend to have a .4 grain spread from lightest to heaviest. Speer 165 grain tend to be just a little more than that. But the Barnes 165 TSXs...

    What scope for varmit hunting?

I've had the first about a year and a half and the second just under a year. Both are the 6.5-20x52 w/ 30mm tube. The are mounted on a 270 WSM set up for antelope and on a 243 WSSM set up for coyote and prarie dogs. I have other scopes that I'm very happy with and I'm pleased to say I've...

    Barnes ? ?

Longwinters, I was referring to Barnes bullet weights being all over the place. When I'm developing an accuracy load for hunting, I try to shoot all the bullets in the group at the same weight and length (to the ogive). With the Barnes bullets, I have to go thru nearly the entire box of 50 to...

    Maturing as a Hunter

We can argue about numbers until it snows in Phoenix, but there comes a point in distance when a bullet spends so much energy that it literally bounces off an animal's hide. That is the point I was trying to make. We need to be confident that we can hit the vital area at that particular...
