Luckily, to date, regardless of "caliber" or "cartridge", or bullet used to take the game, the only jumping out of the freezer has been into the frying pan! ;) (You can substitute roasting pan or stew pot here as befits the meal or cut of meat!)
I will admit that there has been the odd...
Had another great day on the field on Saturday, with my wife, mother and step-father!
We hunted an area a few hours northeast of Fort St John where I used to work.
We saw a few deer (whitetails and mulies...but no whitetail buck for Susan) and moose, including the south end of a northbound bull...
While not the 35 Whelen, my 358 Win in a BLR has a 20" barrel, and with the Hot Cor 220 gr FP, load data says 2400 fps but I get 2209 fps in the short barrel (almost 50 fps/inch velocity loss). It'll shoot 1" groups consistently at 100 yards, and several elk, moose, mule deer and a grizzly...
Most won't touch a BLR trigger, and I have heard plenty of nightmares by those that have tried.
My pre-81 BLR has a terrible trigger, but I have learned where it breaks in its creep and can consistently produce 1" groups with it, so you should be able to learn your trigger too.

Our bird numbers are way down this year...the first year of low population of the 7 year cycle, after several very good years...
We spent the day out last Monday cruising the backroads and trails looking for birds...we saw 5 and came home with a ruffie, a dusky and a spruce hen.
Still, a great...
A fine pair of dandy bucks! Congrats to you both on the father/daughter hunt and memories to be shared for many years to come, and some delicious meals too!
Yes, anyone who has taken a number of moose has learned that they don't all come easy, and usually like to die in the nastiest holes around, whether that be a deep ravine, a cold stream or a nasty swamp...and I have paid my dues!
Now, I hunt smarter! Or at least I like to think so!!!
Yesterday was going to be the best hunting day this week according to the lunar charts, so we headed out early to check an area that has delivered several moose over the years. I briefly thought about taking my new custom LH Rem 700 in 358 Win, but as I have been busy doing some other chores the...
Well, I have to admit that I did use the first aid kit today as I did cut my thumb when my knife slipped field dressing my bull moose. Not bad, but good thing I had the antiseptic wipes, gauze and tape to patch myself up to finish the work. Now to restock the kit...
Better to have and not need...
TP and firemaking materials/tools...if allowed a 3rd, it would be a first aid kit.
luckily our terrain lends itself well in form of landmarks for direction guidance so while I have a compass, I have rarely required/used it.
Food and water are given, as are ammo, knife and multi tool on my belt...
Was in Grande Prairie on Friday running some errands and picking up some supplies and we ran into a couple we have known for awhile but haven't seen in about 8-9 years. Was great to reconnect with these fine folks and we have been invited out to visit in October and to do some archery elk...
