Thanks Alaska, sound advice. My little rifle doesn't seem to care for the 210 NP (older style with relief groove in middle) I have heard that Hornady 225 SP in .338 win mag had accuracy issues, you ever hear this? It may have been a bad batch, but heck this was 40 years ago!
Man, both those bucks look alike true "Swamp Donkeys", ha. A "real man" has no problems with Strong Women...you gotta love them, Pioneer Stock! BTW, just celebrated 50yrs with my own Pioneer Lady, ha
Problem is, finding any of those Jewels! Haven't seen the Sierra 215 in what seems like years...I was just gifted some Sierra 250 SBT, so obligated to work up a load, try them out. Thumpers anyhow. :)
I too agree with the 185. In fact I have a dandy load with IMR 3031 and the Hammer 175 in my 338-06 that is humming. I used the older Barnes 185 XLC at just about 3000 fps in a 338W. Back in 2002, I couldnt get enough powder behind it to go any faster, any kind of compressed load pushed that...
I'm one of those Preachers that can't Golf, can hardly fish and don't cheat on my wife :) ...but I love going to the range and working up loads. I too take plenty of notes, it sure saves time/money!
QL shows 52.9 Hunter with the 150PT for 64K/3000fps or so. I had pretty good compression with the 50gr charge, and I always use a 4" Drop Tube. But, I'm very pleased with the 50gr/150 ELDx as a General Use load.
I will for sure "hot weather check" all the loads I come up with through the winter. Out here, Fall hunts ( and even early winter hunts) can start out frosty and get right up in the 90's! R26 (in a 270) went wonky at 85 deg, and the rifle didn't do well anything else, ha. I had a favored load...
Whoopee! made a short range trip, the 48.5 and 50gr of Hunter both shot under an inch for three. Both hit in my zero; 48.5 +1.5"; 50 +2", I am jazzed! Only thing that "might" improve both is to try a BR2 Primer instead of the Fed LR Primer. Both had a tad of vertical spread, which could have...
A Ruger 77 Tanger was "poor shooting" 7x57 Rifle #4 for me. In addition I tried 2 Mod 70 Fwts and a Mod 700 Classic...all were pretty much 2-21/2" shooters. Serviceable, sure, but not what I wanted. I really like the Mod 70 Fwt for a hunting rifle, thats why I had one rebarreled with a Shilen (...
I have a wad of the old Speer 160 MagTips and some Nosler 160PT. I also have a wad of Hornady 150 ELDX and a couple hundred 150 Partitions ( my main focus). I know I have a box of Barnes 120 TTSX and I "think" I have one of the 120 NBT, but I have to dig it all out this weekend.
For decades the 7x57 with 140gr going somewhere around 2800 has worked swell. Lots of Game has been taken easily with this load/velocity. I like to imagine what it can do with the 150 going that fast ( maybe faster) and the 160 going 2700. I have already loaded for/shot alot of 140s in the...
This rifle made up into an even 8#, not bad I figure for a 25" barrel and 3.5x10 scope. It actually feels much, much lighter in my hands, has great balance! Plus, its about as light a rifle as I can hold still out in the windy prairie/sage flats, where this rifle would be my primary use. I like...
I'm going to focus some time on these three bullets/loads for now. I plan on zeroing at 100 with the 175HH indexing that with the CDS dial. Then seeing where the drops are at 200, 300, respectively. I have no plans, at present, to have a custom Dial made up for the 175HH load. In fact, I would...
I ended up using Big Game ( CCI 250) Lapua cases, with the 210 TTSX. Accuracy was just so-so until I got to 61gr, gave 3/4" for 3 and 62 gave and inch for three, but closer to my 175HH zero.
