Guy, you're right to an extent about my wondering about my cartridge choices over a Mag, but the quandary still remained with about the tests. I too used to shoot a 7RM, back when I thought I 'needed 'it, but it's never been resolved over someone testing , let's say a 300WM with a 180 AB, for an...
Nothing hi-tech on my side. A Taurus 66 357M was my go-to for almost 3 decades. Traveled all across this great nation and it was always close to hand.
It was just a couple of years ago I switched to a 380 as my travel carry. Sold the 66 to my brother (cheap), so it's still in the family.
I do...
OK guys, I have a serious quandary about this: Jug penetration.
I'm a 7/08 & 338 Fed guy true & true. Nuff said, end of story.
Here's the quandary. If either of these two cartridges can put a bullet through 4,5 or sometimes 6 jugs and show exemplary performance, matching the whiz-bang Mag's...
Now, That is a combo I haven't seen B4, but I think you're on the right track! If you can get in the 27's-28's and get good nuff accuracy, I see many dinners on the table.
SI Bro!
Anything over a 150 is a handicap in a 7/08. You could even go down to a 120 mono and it's lights out, period. My personal choice is the 140 AB. I understand the the weight range is pretty narrow, but that is actually what makes this cartridge so wonderful, you can't go too wrong
I have 2 Howa made rifles, both are excellent rifles. $400 and you've got a solid, accurate hunting machine.
I had a Marlin 35 Rem and while I absolutely adored the cartridge, and a deer killer it was, I just couldn't embrace the 336. Wound up trading it for a 12' Jon boat and motor.
Well, the good news is, you're in a solid place with the 160's. They'll work just fine, Lopes to Bear to Moose.
The bad news is, you're in a solid place with the 160's. They'll work just fine, Lopes to Bear to Moose. But, there's No Fun in that !
Go ahead and play with the 140's. What have ya...
Simple, more range time. I want to get the 338 Fed across the Chrony with as many test loads as I can so I can make a final decision with my bullet/powder direction.
Along with that I want to finally get some range time to fine tune my 7/08 with the load I've already settled on. Try a couple of...
Which would you take for a 'Lope hunt? Just about the exact same environmental conditions, on the same sized game. Finding one is a hellva lot harder than killing one.
HA ! I've seen this same question posed on other threads for a long time and not one person ever mentioned kitchen matches wrapped in newspaper, then dipped in wax.
It's always Mil stuff, or some whiz-bang new commercial super starter.
I've been using my waxed matches for almost 50yrs and...
"IF" you truly feel you need more than your 200 grain load, then you should just give up on that rifle and seek else where...
I, personally, am not a big 30/06 fan (7mm & 338 guy) but that load is as good as any I can imagine.
Go forth and slay game at will.....
My Rem 600 is finicky as hell as to what it will shoot well. It took a lot of trial & shotgun like patterns to find 4064 w/180 BT's and get under MOA. Killed my biggest buck with it. Heavy quartering frontal shot, found the bullet just under the hide on the off side rear flank. Stem to stern...
Kinda depends on the size of the pigs you might encounter. If they are going to be in the 200# & under class then you don't need to worry too much about the shoulder shield/gristle. The 150 BT will do fine. I tore up a bunch of 'em, in Fla, with my 7/08. Bang/Flop/BBQ. All complete pass through...
How much lead was put into paint/gasoline before it became an issue and then wound up in some dump site, or in the air? I'll guess 100,000,000X more than any bullet shot at Big Game.
What about the Ba-Zillion of 22 rimfire rounds that no one has a problem with, just yet?
Just another...
When I bought my 7/08 all I had on hand was some left over 150 BT's from my 7RM days, so that is what I loaded up. A bit of RL-15 (at 2650 fps) and it isn't anything to have 3 shot's touching as long as I did my part. I can tell you this, Deer & Pigs don't like them worth a D@mn ! To date it...
I used the 162 gr SB's in my 7RM for a few years and loved them. I was heart broken when Nosler dropped the line and switched to the Ballistic Tips. Kept shooting the SB's until I ran out of my last 2 boxes, but finally switched over the the 150 gr BT's. Didn't change a thing with my load...
The Cabalas nearest to me isn't all that near, and it's an effort to make the trip. I've been 3 times since it opened a bit over a year ago. Take a Number is spot on there as well.
Personally, I will not waste 30 minutes of my time just for some clerk to reach the 5' and hand me a bottle of...
