desertcj,
Straight up this is just My experience with RL-19 and a 7-08. Don't waste the time, nor money. I'm shooting a Ruger M77 boat paddle. The books told me I might expect 2875+, maybe even closer to 2900, with a 140 bullet.
At a Max charge, by Nosler book, I didn't even break 2700 fps and...
Here's a simple question to ask yourself. Would you take the same 350 yd shot with a 30/06 (or a .308) ? If so, then you have no need to fret carrying a 338 Fed.
LVR isn't listed in QL it seems, but I've read reports (from another forum) that it can move a 200 gr out & about 2700fps+ within safe perimeters. No mention on accuracy though. I've got some 200AB's loaded up, just need to get to the range and run them across the Chrony to verify.
I was right on the 7RM band wagon for about a decade. No doubt it was, and still is a wonderful performer. Then I changed home locations and it finally proved to be a less than optimal rifle configuration.
Thus came the 308 Win carbine. A lot easier to climb trees with and had all the necessary...
JES did a rebore for me and I can't praise his work enough. From Ohio to Oregon and back to my door in 3 weeks. UPS did a wonderful job of showing how carelessly they handle packages which resulted in some damage to my action. JES had the forethought/experience to carefully salvage all the...
OH has pigs. Maybe not a bunch, but they are here. Make some time to contact a couple of biologist and you can zero in. Great chance to doing some legal hunting while scouting for a buck as well !
I NEVER tell any of my shooting/hunting buddies I'm shooting SPS bullets. All they know is that I'm a Nosler Snob, have been for 30 yrs. For the life of me I can't tell one whit of difference between the 'retails' and the seconds. The QA must be microscopic.
Before I get done with the couple 'K...
I usually load 5 rounds, starting with the low listed charge and evenly work up to the max load. I'll fire each (stating with the low) and check the cases for pressure signs. Sometimes there's none for all five, sometimes it's at mid load......
I also always run them across my chrono. If I'm...
There is a safe sitting over there in the corner that is Full. I could take any rifle out of it and be completely comfortable hunting whatever I'm in pursuit of, but the one that has had the absolute most field time is my M77 7/08.
That may change somewhat though.....there is a new 338 Fed in...
I hunted 5 yrs with a 150 BT out of my 7RM @ 3050 fps and tagged 9 deer, all within 100 yds, no failures. I can't imagine the 150 ABLR doing any differently.
I vacillated with the 120gr for my 7/08, but finally decided to go with the 140gr. Why ? Not because I thought the 120 wouldn't do the job on deer sized game, it's a proven success. I looked long and hard at the terminal ballistics, and kept an open mind mind to those who had far, far more...
I'm paddling the same canoe as Guy. I chose to step down a rung on the the velocity ladder almost a decade & 1/2 ago, so the BT has been doing just fine.
Example; 7mm/08. The 140gr is just fine for deer, lopes, sheep....Step up to Elk, or Bear and it's just a matter of going to the 150gr...
A 210 partition would be an excellent alternative, and SPS has seconds for sale at this time. I picked up a couple hundred for under $100 a few weeks ago.
To paraphrase a bouncy, bubbly blonde on a popular sit-com, where a father is describing to his children the events leading up to the courtship of the mother...."Goat..Goats..GOATS !!
