Pay no attention to these spoilsports suggesting that you pass on a new rifle!
My two(ish) suggestions would be an '06 or .280/.280AI.
And definitely stay away from a .270. You deserve better!
As well as I can remember, I have two first gen Vortex PSTs, a 4-16x and a 6-24x mounted on a heavy barrel .220 Swift. I've not needed the warranty yet, but that's comforting to hear all the satisfied people who have needed it.
While I love my 700s, I would hate to be limited to just 700s. I really like M70s, and I don't seem to be able to turn down a deal on a Howa (or Vanguard). I've not really been bitten by the lever gun bug, yet, but I wouldn't bet against it happening at some point. I definitely need to play with...
I've kinda become enamored with the 6mm ARC lately. A 16" AR so chambered would tick off a lot of boxes for a truck gun for me. If it gets a little beat up, who cares? It's an AR. It's supposed to be a little scruffy. Throw on a relatively small suppressor, I'd think that would be mighty handy...
Back in the day, I kinda liked the idea of .257 and 6.5 WSMs. I haven't done enough obsessing over the PRC cases, but I bet they'd be just dandy. Kinda hard to justify with a .257 Weatherby, though.
If I were in your shoes, my decision would totally be based on what action I was building on, short or long. I love my .25-06, and I have a goofy desire to own a .308 based cartridge in every bore size, .375 on down. Outside of maybe 8mm.
I don't really like relegating my 788 to truck gun usage... too sentimental to beat the crap out of it. One of these days I'm gonna rebarrel a .243 Featherweight to 6mm, just to piss everyone off...
I used to smoke a fair amount of cigars. It never became a habit.... I dunno if it's because I don't smoke in vehicles, or because I don't want to smell like smoke all day, or if because every place I've worked puts the kibosh on smoking in rigs.
Thanks, fellas. Doing well so far. Paul, that's a good idea, I don't drink nearly enough water. The short attention span that helps forget about the nicotine apparently comes back to bite me when it comes to remembering to drink water. Doh!
Thanks, Dan. It's kinda funny, I guess my short attention span helps in this case. I get out of my van, reach for the Kodiak that I kept in a pocket in the door, realize I don't have a can, then I'm immediately thinking about something else.
Well, day four is done. I found myself reflexively looking for a can a couple of times today, but no serious cravings yet. Funny, the worst (and it wasn't even close to being bad) time was when I was getting out of my van to set up my survey gear.
