I'm sure I'll forget some but here goes.
My first was with a 270 in CA in the early 80's.
after that a few were killed with a 243
My first ID deer was killed with a Remington 600 .350 Rem mag
After that it was a 270 and then quite a few with a 300wm
Then it was a 358STA, 375-358STA, and .416...
I use the Outdoor Edge knives. I keep two with me along with 6 or so blades all the time. I usually do all the quartering, backstrap, tenderloin, and neck removal when we shoot anything and my buddy skins the quarters. Then I come back and bone them out after he skins them. He knows I'm way...
I've killed a few with .50 cal muzzleloaders in WY and ID, quite a few with a 7STW in WY, and a couple with a 30-338 in WY and ID. I'm sure I missed one or two in there but it's hard to remember since the vast majority were in the 1990's when it was actually fairly easy to draw tags.
I shot my first bull with a 308 Baer using 165 Partitions at 3300fps. It was a spike at 100yds. The first shot was in the lungs. He stepped behind a bush and then stepped out again. I shot him again in the lungs. He stepped behind the same bush and back out again to receive shot 3 in the lungs...
There is no replacement for displacement, just like in motors. The bigger calibers kill better as long as the bullets expand correctly. Rapid expanding heavy trauma bullets help small calibers act a bit bigger but a fast 375 or 416 flat hammers animals. The down side to the larger caliber is...

I'm sure there is something I forgot about and it's getting harder to keep track of how many with each. I bet it was north of 15 with my .50 muzzleloader. The 6.5x47L...
The bolt opening is on the ramp where the cooking piece falls. Once the bolt is open the cooking piece sits in a notch in the back of the bolt body. If that notch is too deep it takes more effort to turn the bolt because the cooking piece has to back out of that notch to engage the sear on the...
Remington was really good at messing up the notch the cocking piece sits in at the back of the bolt. I have had to fix tons of them that have had that notch rotated one way or another causing the cocking piece to drag as the bolt is cycled. I have also seen the notch cut too deep causing hard...
Joe,
I can't even imagine losing one of my kids. That must be about the hardest thing to ever go through. If you need help in any way reach out to someone, either here or local friends/family. I'm sure there are plenty of people willing to talk, myself included, if you need someone to listen or...
Guy,
You might consider Newfoundland for moose, bear, and possibly caribou as well. You might not shoot monsters but its less than half the price of a guided AK moose hunt.
I'm even questioning the point game in WY and UT at 51. I'm staying in until I draw 1 good elk, deer and antelope tag in each state and then I'll look at other options. When I started putting in for WY it was 5 points to draw a region G deer tag. It's now 7 or 8 and might be 9 by the time I draw...
Guy,
I'd start putting in for UT or WY for cow elk. You'll draw every 2-3 years on average and if you put in for both you can draw one nearly every year. Tags are relatively cheap for out of state. You can also work on the antelope and deer draws. You can buy points up until 10/31 for WY.
As...
I would shoot what shoots best. If the ranges are kept reasonable the difference in bullet weight won't matter. I have tons of 6.5's too., 2) 6.5x47's, 2) 6.5CM's, a 6.5saum, a 6.5x68 Imp, and 3) 6.5-300wm's. I'm about to build some 6.5PRC's for my kids too.
I've shot lots of ELD-M's and Amax's too and if anything I think they kill better than Bergers. I just built a 30-28 Nosler (Defiance Anti, Proof Sendero, McMillan Game Scout, and Nightforce NX8 4x32 that weighs 8lbs 10oz) and it shoots 208 ELD-M's pretty well at 3065fps with H-1000. It should...
I have a box of 210 ABLR that I might of cut one in half out of. Here are 220 Bergers

I've killed a bunch of elk with 215's and watched many more shot with them. I personally...
Being in DC during elk season just seems so wrong. Those are complete opposites. I did take the kids to DC last year when we went to Maryland for a Sika deer hunt. It was a long day but we got to see a bunch. My feet were worn out after walking all over the "complex". It was cool to see...
