Here are my two favorites. The first is my youngest sons first big game animal in ID. He shot a doe whitetail on a sika deer hunt in MD last year. The second is my oldest sons second elk at 11 years old. He is on his way to besting me. I don't think I shot my first until I was 22 or 23...
My oldest shot a bull last year and we had some guys on dirt bike ruin our bull season this year, its a restricted motor vehicle area and they decided it was OK to run anywhere and everywhere with their dirt bikes. Dirt bikes are only supposed to be used to move camp or haul meat in and out. The...
Are any of them 300 PRC's? I've heard of some other 300 PRC's not shooting.
I do have a buddy that had a 300RUM that would shoot in the .3's but the mag boxes are so short for a 300RUM he had to seat bullets really deep and give up velocity. It bugged him enough he got rid of it.
My hunting buddy won one of them last July (7/21) and finally got it this July. It was a titanium 300PRC. I don't think I ever shot a group under a inch with it. Most were 1.5-2". Their actions cycle like crap, compared to even a Remington, the firing pin protrusion was too high (ie the primer...
The reason it was called ball powder was because of the shape. The article I supplied explains that. Now there are extruded/stick double based powders so calling all double based powders ball powder is incorrect.
Stick Propellants
See Photo Gallery
Virtually all stick propellant used in small arms is single-perforation (hole) grain. It is predominantly used for rifle propellants. A chemical deterrent coating is added to the surface to slow the initial burn to further improve the progressivity. These...
Ball powder is ball powder, literally it is a ball shaped powder, the ingredients don't change that. None of the rifle powders Alliant makes is a ball shape, all are stick powders. Your WC872 example is a ball powder and almost all of them are extremely temp sensitive. A few of the new ones...
I use to shoot 250gr Sierra's out of my 375-358STA at 3080fps. I killed a lot of stuff with that gun. I'm probably going to build a 37-28 Nosler before too long. I have a McMillan A-3 sporter with a wood dip and I'll have a carbon wrapped Brux barrel pretty soon. The nearly .300" shorter case...
869 is a ball powder. R-33 is a stick powder. The biggest problem with most ball powders is the temp sensitivity but, as has been mentioned, they tend to foul barrels too. H-1000 is one of the most temp stable slow powders out there and it burns quite clean.
Sierra match bullets are terrible on game. Hornady ELD-M's and Bergers perform way different. I've killed 20+ elk with those bullets and watched at least 20 more taken by others. Very few go far if anywhere and most don't require follow up shots. Sierra's tend to not open at all or blow up. I...
What is the point then? The 338 Win Mag is a couple grains more then the 264 because the neck diameter is larger. It's a non belted 338 Win Mag with a rebated case head that is .500" at the base versus .532 for the belt or .512-.513 in front of the belt of the Win Mag. Talk about redundancy...
My first was a custom 6.5x284 followed by a 264 Win Mag. Now I have 2) 6.5x47L, 2) 6.5 Creedmoors, 3)6.5-300wm's, 6.5SAUM, 6.5PRC, and 6.5x68 Imp. My favorite is probably the 6.5-300wm's because I've shot a bunch of animals with them.
I've shot them with a 300WSM, 300wm, 358STA, 416 Rem, .458 Lott, and .460 Weatherby. I'm pretty sure there are others, as I use to bait a ton in the 90's and early 2000's, but I can't remember them. Too much death to keep track of it all
I know we had one bait on private property that...
I took my Kudu at 515yds, my impala was about 100yds, my warthog was about 50 and my gemsbok was about 400yds. All were shot with my 375-358STA shooting 250gr Sierras at 3080fps. I shot my blesbok with a 30-338 and 190 Bergers at about 250yds.
