I don't think you tracking job was related at all to the cartridge;looks like just plain bad luck and more bullet related than anything else. That could have happened with just about any cartridge with a similar bullet that did not perform as we'd expect.
Generally, cartridges don't cause...
Scotty you can factor in different lots of components but IME barrel and throat internal dimensions, style of rifling, even materials (SS vs CM) can all have an impact on actual velocity variations rifle to rifle.
Chamber not so much....
It is amazing so many stay within the ball park.
Another thing to consider, though, is that Nosler has no control in what rifles its factory ammo will be used. Take the OPs conversion as an example. They may be able to control dimensions in their rifles but have no control over reamer/chamber throat dimensions and (just as important) barrel...
Yeah.....I got tired of that myself plus the cost and lack general availability of one-source boutique brass.
So...these days I just make my own....
I never said the signs of high pressure would be excessive or visible; but it for example one round is generating 62,000 psi and the other 65,000 psi, you won't be able to tell y looking at the case but it doesn't mean the pressures aren't "higher".
I have had some 7mm WSM factory loads by...
Probably because the 7mm WSM is loaded to higher pressures. Only logical explanation besides differences in barrels and throats which can easily make a smaller cartridge look as fast as a bigger one, too.
The 28 Nosler is a big case and the nice thing about it seems to be very high velocities...
Walkinhorseman: Not all the Kimbers Ive had shot like that...but some have. I seem to be running about 50-50 and got rid of all of them until I decided to take one more chance with the one you see here.
But this one seems to work. I cant afford 5 of them to ru your test but understand what you...
I always liked the 270 Win in a light rifle, 22" barrel. If I am going to burn more power than a 270 Winchester, and use a 24" barrel I would rather move on up to the 7mm bore size and take advantage of the heavier 7mm bullets, which I like to think offer some advantage over anything in 270...
Bullets like that 175 BBC change the ball game, and nudge you up a step or so in caliber and bullet weight.
I have been watching this level of on game performance from the BBC since the 1980's; they have consistently performed in this fashion and from a killing standpoint take a back seat to...
Possibly more impressive is the penetration and exit on the cow elk at more moderate distance.
Ample evidence that bullets that expand with larger frontal area certainly penetrate more than they need to,even if not as far as a mono. Looks to me like it penetrated more than enough.
I know the...
Excellent Scotty. The most weight loss I have seen from BBC, but very good nonetheless.
Maybe Bill got a bad bond on that one somehow..... :)
That hole through vitals is more on par with what you'd see from most 338 bullets. You're right in pointing out that a DRT kill on a elk with a pure...
Andy I am old enough for the H205/N205 business as well; and have seen those velocities from a couple of 22" pre 64 M70 FW barrels that were measured and found to be oversized. I had a lot of discussions with Bill Steigers about that very subject.
Yes if a 30/06 gets to those velocities it...
