Mark, knowing nothing about your rifle or anything else I was just throwing out some ideas about stuff that's caught me in the past & continues to screw up my otherwise good groups.
Hoping you found the magic combination, but I'm curious what use the .307 mandrel has when using a bushing die...
I've noticed that it takes some of my rifles a little longer than 2 or 3 fouling shots to start grouping well again after a through cleaning with all these new decoppering, decarboning chemicals. Too much of a good thing? Maybe.
Also 3 shot groups are at the ragged minimum end of all things...
I'm sure someone will be along with a QL, but in the meantime...
Speer #15 has RL26 loads for 300 H&H. It's good to see some of the older cartridges getting reshot with modern powders. With 150s the start charge is 70.3 @2954 to 77.9 @3276. With 165s start 67 @2807 to 74 @3136. With 180s start...
Just dropped in & saw this. It's late so there may be some typos. No coffee tonight. There's a real live gunshow happening tomorrow & I need a few things so need to sleep soon. The Creedmoor series is little more than any number of old wildcats based on Charles Newton's 250 Savage with varying...
It looks like a deer killer. FWIW my pre-warning 77 likes to go a bit faster with these bullets. It's best groups are up around 47.5 to 48 gr of IMR4350, WW brass & WLR at c. 2650fps. That's the warm end of some book data, but perfectly safe in a modern rifle. It's an old lot of powder from a...
FWIW I had to go back to Nosler #2 (1981) to find #28470. It just says hollow point with no other description & #28471 is listed right below it as HP Match. Nothing about either in Nosler #1 (1976) & no mention of #28470 in #3 (1989). By Nosler #4 (1996) the Solid Bases were all phased into...
Glad to share. I forgot to write these were all 4 shot groups. The SD & ES numbers were pretty good with the 2000MR. The SD for all loads with all 3 bullet weights never exceeded 20 & there were enough single digits to show good uniformity. CFE223 was about double this with the 200s.
A 24" barreled Sako Riihmaki shot my best groups with IMR4198 & Hornady 50SX lit by a 205M not chronographed for some reason. W748 also worked well with same bullet primer at just under 2900fps. This was a great lot of 50SXs in a few rifles up a Swift at 3850fps.
With Hornady 53 Match HPs H322...
Good information.
To add to the above in a 700 Classic standard 35 Whelen 22" barrel with 1.5-5x Leupold using new/old stock RP brass & WLR.
At 85* CCFE223/200 Horn. SpPt at 3.340" from 65gr @2718fps to 71.5 @ 2924fps. calling 70gr. @2902fps max. groups open from c.3/4" at 68gr. @2803fps...
I have a 6.5 Needmore & it wasn't an easy date on prom night to get shooting well as so many claim, but after some initial frustration it does work pretty well. I'm also just beginning the journey with 25-06 so have not much real experience with it yet.
For a mountain rifle a thinner & shorter...
Yup. I saw this last night but was too tired to comment. Try shooting the offending "oval primer pockets" for group. Share your results.
IMO it's doubtful that these flash holes will be noticeable to an average shooter even with an above average rifle. I'm still using new (unfired) 30 year old...
Don't think it can be rebored to 358, but if it got to that point I'd have to talk to JES. Only measure .550 at the muzzle. I've heard JES wants .125 on either side of the bored caliber.
Maybe a 338 Federal? It will be a tad under .125/side.
If you dont want it, send it over here. I've never had any problems with push feed Model 70s & have had more than a few. The hatred is misplaced.
Winchester from that era's idea of bedding often resembles little more than a gob of silicon sealer near the recoil lug but they usually shoot pretty...
Just got a new 700 Long Range... the fit, finish, & function is much less than stellar. I inquired as to the location of the nearest local warranty repair shop (remember them?) & was instructed the rifle must be returned to their NY facility for repair after completing a warranty claim. Thinking...
For many years I used plain old Shooters Choice with one piece coated rods & an O ring boreguide. Patch goes thru once from the breech (where possible) & drops off. Every 20 rounds or so 2 wet patch, wet tight bronze brush at least 10 strokes, 3 wet patch, soak 15 minutes or as long as a day or...
Thanks to everyone for the responses. I wasn't necessarily looking for your pet load, but will take note of them for future load development.
The 1st question was about anyone's experience with gain/loss per inch of barrel in 25-06 as I have no experience with this cartridge to fall back on...
Rather than muck up the RL26 thread, I'll post this seperately.
Is c. 60-70, or more, fps change per inch of barrel length normal in 25-06?
This is the 1st 25-06 I've worked with & am exceeding all loading manual speeds at listed charge weights by a pretty good amount; newest Nosler, Sierra...
