Was able to get this buck down Monday night. Rifle was cheap old savage axis 308 with Barnes 130gr TTSX. Shot was across a creek bottom. Bullet entered right in front of the onside shoulder and stopped in the hide of the off side shoulder. Buck dropped in his tracks. Retained weight 130.2 gr (I...
I have killed one deer with the 130gr Barnes TTSX and it ran about 15 yards. My 308 likes BL-C2, CFE 223 and TAC with the 130 TTSX. Good luck and happy hunting!
I have had excellent results in my cheap savage axis 308 with TAC, BL-C2 and CFE 223. I have I have used anything from 125gr to 165gr and all 3 powders have proven to be very accurate and very fast.
Never used the 140 BT on deer out of 7-08 but have seen over a dozen whitetails shot with the 120gr BT out of a 7-08 and the farthest I have ever seen a deer run is 40-50 yards. Great bullet for deer.
I use R17 in my 243. I have never gotten close to those speeds though. If I get 3000 with a 95/100 gr bullet in my 243 I am happy. 3230 fps seems a bit high to me.
I have not decided yet what I am shooting at deer this year. I did make a box of 7-08 120 Nosler Ballistic Tips today though. I am leaning towards 6.5 CM or 7 Mag as the primary for the fall.
Man I am a lefty and cut my teeth with a Remington 700 in 270. I do not own a lefty rifle and have gotten so used to right handed rifle not sure I would be coordinated enough to use a lefty rifle lol!
I have had a 30-06 for quite a while so I already was familiar 30 caliber. However to answer your question, I like the 308 more for some odd reason. 30-06 outperforms 308 but something about the 308 is just endearing to me.
I have only had two 308's. One was a Ruger American I bought for 150 at pawn shop and later sold to make room in the safe. So after I got a bigger safe (I know excellent problem solving skills) I decided I needed to have another 308 since I had all the reloading components. I bought a cheap...
If I shoot the barrel out on this Tikka I will re-barrel it with a 26" barrel. This rifle shoots extremely accurate just a bit slower than most 7 mags. I know the old saying holds true "It doesn't matter how fast you miss" but I like to get magnum speeds out of a magnum caliber.
