Just why? I understand that it isn’t about need, but lightning isn’t going to strike with this cartridge whether ammo is available or not. I lean towards the latter. Just why?
I don’t think it’s a big deal. Mono bullets are usually used best at 400 yards or less in order to ensure expansion. The BC doesn’t really come into play until it gets past that 400 yard mark. One manufacturer in particular states just that about their long range hunting bullets. I wouldn’t...
These are from another location. These seem realistic. A friend gets a few fps less (15-28 fps) in his 26” barrel. He followed this ladder closely but was able to get about a half grain higher before stopping with Retumbo. LRT didn’t show any over pressure.
The thing that stands out to me most is that it feels much lighter than it is. Its balance makes it feel light and quick handling. You don’t feel any barrel weight when the rifle is shouldered.
It’s the factory pad. It feels like a Decelerator and works well. Also it has the adjustable X-Mark Pro trigger. It’s a great trigger. I put a Timney on another rifle and the X-Mark is as good as the Timney.
Edit: I’ll say almost as good as the Timney. This made me check them one after the...
Good advice above. The answer is yes. A safe and accurate load with xyz brass may very well be unsafe to an extreme degree with abc brass. Especially if you’re inclined to shoot your rifle at the top end of its safe pressure range. It’s not as pronounced with mid level loads. Brass can and will...
I do like my CDL very much. It’s a new production with their higher grade steel barrels/receivers and tighter tolerances. It’s a 700 CDL in 7mm Rem Mag with the hammer forged 26” 1:8 twist barrel. I could go on about every little thing but here is the bottom line.
It’s a very attractive rifle...
I think I’ll just use my Lil Gun to load for it and quit being stubborn. Lol. I think I’ve been determined to prove a 3/4” wrench will work on a 5/8” nut, so to speak. “Use the right tool for the job Joe.“ 🤣
This is a factory Hornady Custom load. I have no idea where I came up with 84.5 grains. It holds 59.1 grains of water So Quickloads number of 60 is dead on. Maybe I saw one number and a completely different one registered in my mind. My sincere apologies. Here are the photos of the operation...
Also I just measured fired case water capacity. Case Is fired, unsized, with primer intact. It will hold 84.5 grains of water. The water is filled until it is domed at the case mouth but does not overflow. OAL of the loaded round is 2.165”, 43 grains H4198, and produces 1948 fps. Just thought...
Thank you Jim. It looks like it’s back to the drawing board. I worked up using Hodgdons data which shows 42.8 grains as max I think, and didn’t think there would be such a disparity in pressure with the lack of indicators. Regardless, a few fps isn’t worth the risky possibilities. Again, thanks...
I’m actually finding accuracy and velocity with H4198 in my new 450 Bushmaster. I have Lil Gun and it works great with all but the heaviest bullets. Would one of you be kind enough to run a couple Quickload projections for H4198 and IMR4198?

Barrel length of 18.63” with a 5r...
Good deal. I’m sure you’ll get the performance you’re looking for. I’ve always had pretty good luck getting 270’s shooting well. Keep us posted on how it goes. 👍🏻
If you’d like to try a mono I could hook you up with a pack or two of E-Tips if you can’t find any. That’s about the extent of what I have on hand for the 270 Win right now. 56.1 grains of Staball 6.5 runs them at 3150ish in mine from a 24” barrel. 55.5 grains IMR4831 gets the same 3150 with...
Agreed. The vitals get really small when they are 400+ yards away. Judging wind drift is much tougher for me than elevation. Gravity is constant, wind is not. Give me a good backpack as a rest with light wind and I’m pretty confident. Stiff gusting wind with a spindly rest and I let them walk. I...
I think BC’s are given much more importance than should be if you’re 400 yards or less. At 400 yards or less a bad BC bullet will be within a few inches of a high BC bullet. A Hot Cor and ELD-x will be within about 2 inches of one another at 300 yards, and the Hot Cor has a pretty good BC for a...
Unfortunately, I don’t have any 150 grain bullets at all for a 270. If I need a heavier bullet in .277 I use the E-Tip, or Partition. They usually let it punch a little above it’s weight class.
