At the top end of 43 grains it’s a compressed charge, though not overly so. Depending on what the rifle tells me, I wouldn’t want to go much over 44 grains. At that point the case would be stuffed pretty full. I’d like to get 1900ish but that may be pushing it for an 18.6” barrel. May be closer...
I forgot to mention that I had to use my 45-70 seating die to seat the bullets. The seating stem in the Redding die is too short. It applied a proper taper crimp but I’ll contact Redding on Monday to have them send the correct seating stem.
Well I loaded some test loads with 300gr XTP Mag bullets. I started at 40 grains of H4198 going up to 43 grains in .5 grain increments. According to Hodgdon information it gets a little better velocity with 300 grain loads than the others. Hopefully it will cycle the action.
I’m running Hornady...
Wow! The Cabela’s near me has their primers for $99.99 per 1000 LR/LRM and $89.99 per 1000 for CCI 450’s and Rem 7 1/2’s. Unfortunately the $300+ price tag on the 8 pound jug is pretty much the going price for popular rifle powders with the exception of Ramshot Powders. I’ve seen the Vihtivouri...
I’ll keep at it. I’m in no rush and it’s therapeutic tinker time for me. The 1137 steel of the barrel should take the rust bluing very nicely. At least is has on previous Green Mountain barrels I’ve did for a few friends. If it turns out like I see it in my mind it will be nice.
As far as the...
Also if anyone is thinking of a small caliber muzzleloader build or barrel, I have two 13/16” TC breech plugs still on the barrels if anyone needs them. They are pretty hard to come by these days. The barrels aren’t usable but the under ribs and breech plugs can be reused. I don’t want anything...
Here’s a couple pictures of the barrel, under rib, thimbles, sights, and under lug. There’s not a lot of parts but there is a lot of fitting required with small files to make everything fit correctly. Since these photos I’ve dovetailed in the under lug. I have some work to do on the snail and...
Just my personal opinion but I think Starline makes the finest 45-70 brass that can be had. Their 308 Win brass seems to be very high quality as well. I aneal every third firing with my 45-70 but I have 9 firings on my oldest batch of 50. Havent had a split case yet, and they still hold onto the...
I’m putting a 45 caliber round ball barrel on my TC Seneca. It’s a spotless .36 caliber squirrel rifle and one of the best carrying little guns I’ve ever held. I’ve got a cut rifled 13/16” Green Mountain barrel blank and am fitting the breech plug right now. It’s rifled to 1:66” for round balls...
I have the exact same rifle and it’s been my absolute favorite since I bought it new on day one. Every rifle I own would go before that one. The lines of a 22” barreled 1895 are beautiful. They are accurate as all get out, strong, and balanced perfectly. And just like a pretty lady they will...
I cleaned it well after firing the 20 rounds. I ran the borescope down the barrel before cleaning. It has a very nice bore and crown. It showed no copper fouling. I used Sweets after that and there was no blue on the patches. It was clean with 2 wet patches and 3 dry patches. Once the Hornady...
There’s not really anything here in Ohio that a body would need protection from other than 2 legged critters. When in the woods I always have my hunting rifle/shotgun handy and I‘ll have my 1911 on my right hip. I have it equipped with a Wolf recoil and hammer spring, recoil buffer, and 45 Super...
Got to shoot it a little bit today, and it did pretty well for factory ammunition. I went through it pretty meticulously. I’m going to say it had never been fired. I say this for a few reasons. Those being that there was no primer shadow on the bolt face, the finish on all the moving parts was...
I still have the Glock 22 that I’ve carried for years. With as many rounds that have been put through it, man it’s a slick action. My 1911 is my baby though. I never walk out the door without it.
