I never went on that trip. It was...is...something I want to do. Just haven't gotten there yet. Yet. ;)
I quartered/disassembled Megan's buck today and put it in my "deer fridge". Temps are edging just high enough that I want it in a fridge till it's ready to be cut. I made a rack out of 3/4"...
Thanks, everyone, for the kind words.
She is growing up fast and she’s become a good hunter.
I have to skin the buck yet. Her doe is still on the gambrel! Lol
She shot the buck at a hard quartering away angle, entering behind the liver and basically obliterating the liver on the way forward...
Today (11/26) was the opener in Pennsylvania for rifle season. We can take bucks or does in the area I hunt, and Megan and I set out as we have been every opening day since 2014 when she first accompanied me as a hunter in her own right.
Forecast wasn't good.... some rain-free time this...
There’s a few of us out there shooting patched round balls yet, Guy! ;)
Next deer I kill will be shot with a ball I cast myself...just for some added fun. :)
That's awesome April!
Very cool to see more women in the sport. I love stories like this to share with my kids..... girls do hunt, and they are good at it. Your granddaughter helps me reinforce that with them!
I actually started doing nearly exactly this, DH.
My last time shooting my 62 was a little over a week ago, and the tang screw won't freakin' budge to remove it. I'm taking it for the gentleman who made it to have a look and help me with it (And then clean up my mangling of the screw...
My daughter has commandeered my pre64 Model 70 30-06. I mentioned it elsewhere about her being a lefty, now being a righty, and she shoots the 06 well.
She's got a bit of a struggle with the stock drop and getting the scope aligned quickly, which I understand, since she's used to a good cheek...
I was a 270 shooter in my teens, went to a 30-06 for a looooong time, and recently returned to using a 270.
I don't think the 270 is any harder on meat than any other bottleneck/rimless round. A lot of damage can be avoided by bullet selection and shot placement.
I've shot some with 150gr...
Long story short...
I'm thinking of trading in my carry gun, an XDs 3.3" 9mm, toward a Glock.
I've been shooting my G40MOS and I carry it when hunting/in the woods, and I have really grown fond of it.
I thought about a 29 for carry, but I do think the 9mm is capable. I also like having at...
Bow season started here in Pennsylvania on Sept 15. It's been a hot, rainy summer, and mosquitoes are potentially outnumbering humans by about 10,000:1 right now. My Thermacell has been essential gear.
Thurs. Sept 20... I was late getting out of work, late getting to my hunting area, and was...
I honestly think she’ll be ok with the existing load.
She’s at 2650 for a 140PT now in her 7wsm.
A 165 at 2700 will be a pretty modest increase in recoil. I’ve shot this ‘06 and that load a fair bit. It’s reliably MOA to 300 and is easy on the shoulder.
I have her use a PAST pad at the...
It actually occurred to me this morning—
I have a 1949-vintage pre64 m70 in 30-06. It was worked on a bit. It’s a shooter, not a collector.
Before I got it, it had a LimbSaver installed.
I have it shooting quite well at 2700fps for a 165gr Partition. Recoil is quite manageable given the...
50.6gr RL26, Fed 210 primer, Norma brass, 140gr NBT....22" barrel. That's for my old man's rifle. He'll be hunting that load and that rifle this year.
Megan's rifle is a backwards oriented 7mmWSM. I load it with H4895 and a 140 NPT to about 2650 and it shoots about 1.1-1.2" at 100 yards and...
