Doing what I was told to do here, I retested five loads, after setting the bullet back 2.829" to 2.840" OAL. I will need to do some more work, but here are the results, thus far, starting with the best group and working down. All were fired with 120gr. Hornady Varmint bullets, R-P cases and...
Isn't it true that if a man has only one rifle, over the years, it becomes the all time best rifle/cartridge combination?
In 1953, my cousin Harry, was given an old Savage 99, chambered in .303Savage. We were both 11 years old. Nearly every year he slayed local deer with that old rifle and its...
My error, but for many years, I believed that getting the bullet close to the lands was best.
I load the bullet in the case longer than I know will work. Coat the bullet with fiber tipped pen, and continue to "try" load, until no sign of the lands shows in the ink on the bullet. Then back off...
Thanks for all the hints. I will try backing off the OAL, as the 120gr. Horn. Varmint bullet (flat base) that I wanted her to use for practice would close on 2.866" so I was backing off .006" to .012" and not getting good groups. Tomorrow I will try with backing off some more on the OAL.
I am...
I am disappointed in the performance of the new Howa 1500 7mm-08 rifle that I bought the wife. I have worked up loads, in the past, for all my hunting rifles over the years and have always gotten groups in the 1/2" area, or less, at 100 yards. This rifle, using factory Remington 140gr bullets...
Oldtrader3, I would take part in your listing by eras. You first!
About the converted military rifles; I did list the sporterized M98 rifles as one of my personal favorites. I've owned six in various calibers.
Don't forget, the American arms manufacturers were slow to get back into the...
I have to say that would take any of Dr. Mike's choices, if I did not have my own rifle on a hunting trip.
I will to admit, I cut my teeth while reading articles written by Jack O'Connor, so, I am a bolt action guy first and single shot guy second. I never considered needing a rapid 2nd shot...
I do not know what he was smoking when he wrote this list. It comes out of the Dec. 2008 Field & Stream, that I happened to run across. The writer list these as his ten top Whitetail deer rifle *of all time*! Most of the list seems to be from Granpop's day. I also believe that he discounted the...
The too thick neck walls occured on Win., R-P and FC brass.
New problem! I acted hastily because I wanted to get loading *fast*! "Act in haste, regret at your leisure!" I had never used Lee loading dies in the past and they were on a table at the local gunshow, in the 7mm-08 that I needed. The...
Hello Group,
I have been stumbling around, learning about hand loading since the 1960s, and somehow, I never ran into this problem.
In loading for my wife's 7mm-08 I full length resized some .308Win. to 7mm. The 7mm-08 fired brass had been reloadong fine, but when I tried to seat the 7mm...
Before I latched on to Nosler bullets, I dropped a fair number of deer with Sierra bullets. Since I could only fine one box of 50 Nosler 129gr. BT, I bought a couple boxes of 120gr.Sierras. They will be good for her to practice with and when hunting season opens, we can zero again, using the...
Pigs are tough! Not bullet proof, but tough. I am hard pressed to be able to cut that frontal armor that big pigs have around their shoulders and chest. Even with a razor sharp knife, the armor is hard to cut through.
I had that 7mm 140 AB going out the muzzle of my 7mmRemMag, at 3100 fps. The...
No exit wounds that I definitely remember happening with 140gr. AB:
(1) Wild pig, roughly 150 lbs. Quartering away, right to left, at about 85 yards. I held back on the left side ribs to get the bullet through his heart/lung area. The bullet did cut his heart and broke the right side shoulder...
The only thing available from Nosler at Jerrys Sports Ctr., where I have my wholesale account, was one box of Nosler 120gr. BT. I bought them for the wife's 7mm-08 and some more Nosler PT, 7mm 140gr. for my own 280Rem.
Sadly, as I have been informed by another List Member above, Nosler does...
I used the inexpensive Privi-Partizan 140 gr.SP BT bullets that I had on hand. Fired 20 using three different OAL. The ones set back .0015 off the lands grouped the best, but not the tight groups that I will get once I work up 120gr. loads for her.
I did not expect a lot from that bullet...
laylanddad,
I will file away that info for future use. Thank you!
However, I was told by other list members that trigger jobs on the Handi-Rifle seldom work out to the owners satisfaction. I bought the Wife and Howa Youth rifle in 7mm-08.
Thank you again,
Steven
I just received the Wife's new rifle, being the Howa 1500 youth model in 7mm-08. I am very satified with the quality. I used 20 rounds of R-P factory 140gr. cartridges to break the rifle in, cleaning after each round. Because residual lube is always left, after pushing four dry patches through...
Thanks for all the good wishes!
Hand loading: I have seen this happen in the past, where the young person wants to flail away the ammo, but hand loading just does not excite some of them.
I will, of course try to get this grandson hooked on hand loading. Time will tell.
I hunted and shot Cross...
Choosing from three; 260Rem., 257Roberts and 7mm-08, I still come up picking the 7mm-08. Reasons: common ammo sold at big box stores who carry ammo. Utilizes the great flying 7mm bullet.
The other two are only for those of us nuts, who hand load cartridges.
Since my grandson will be 17 in...
