    Let the fun begin.

Day 3. After having agonized most of the night that I was wrong on the property line the night before and could have clearly harvested the big boy before he got to cover, we started the day on the southeast just like day 1. Within 10 minutes of first light we were on a group of five bucks with...

    Let the fun begin.

Day 2 started slow. We once again proved we could think like deer, but not humans. In the expectation that some hunters would repeat what they did the day before, we set up on the south side of the area to act as blockers for the drivers in the thick stuff. The hunters never showed up. It...

    Let the fun begin.

Saturday was opening day. We set up to the east side of our chosen spot. We were set up for a spot and stalk or spot and long range shot type of hunt. We had a quick "Wheres Waldo" moment with a little lost mulie buck. From previous experience, jumping into the cuts to try pop up...

    Let the fun begin.

After 2 days of scouting the countryside, we finished our hunt in 3 days. To start, I figured I would update the scouting time a bit. We spent most of 2 days looking into creek bottoms draining into the Cheyenne River. Beautiful country, but tough hunting conditions. The breaks and draws...

    Junk... Treasure

No big deal. Was always taught to treat others as you would hope they would treat you. Wish a few more people thought that way now days. Since the original post, I have developed a problem. Now I can't decide whether to rechamber to 7-300WM or the new 28 Nosler. Any thoughts?

180 Berger VLD, IMR 7828, and 7 STW, OH MY!

On Saturday, I fouled the barrel and played with 160 Accubonds and 180 VLD-H to decide which was going to be my hunting load. 100 yard zeros are the same for either round. Moved out to 200 to check drops and to decide which load to go with. Here is the 200 yard 180VLD-H load. A little luck...

    Junk... Treasure

I found my winter project! I picked up a Remington 700 ADL syn/stainless in 7mm rem mag with a 26 inch barrel on Sunday morning. The previous owner told me it was junk and he had only shot it 20 times and had a hard time getting rounds to chamber and it wasn't minute of paper accurate. Still...

    Case stretch. Neck blow out

I have noticed this with Federal and Winchester brass in 7 rem mag, and with Remington brass in 8 rem mag. I had some once fired brass from an old rifle that I made the mistake of full length sizing once for a new rifle. Brass made it about 2 more loads before showing signs of case head...

    2 in, 1 out question.

I walked the seating depth out towards the lands in 0.005 inch increments. The first two groups were 2 in 1 out, the third group stacked 3 shots in a vertical group, the fourth gave me a nice 0.4 MOA clover leaf, and the fifth group was 2 in one hole 1 almost in for a 0.5 MOA. Turns out the...

    2 in, 1 out question.

Had a question about the old theory of adjusting seating depth to bring the flier back in to the group. I almost always hear people suggest seating the bullet deeper into the case in 0.005 inch increments to see if you can bring it in. I have had mixed results doing this. I have also heard...

    Stands are set

I found that the older I got and the more bones and ligaments I destroyed, the more I liked stands. And after about falling out of one I have found that I like ground blinds even more. This year will be my first serious walk-in hunts in almost 10 years. Hope the knees hold up.

    QL Request 325 WSM

Nice. The fifth node for OBT is right about where I saw the nodes on OCW work this morning. 64.0gn H4350 was sub MOA with the 180gn BTips, and 63.5 was sub MOA for the 200 AB. The fourth node is out of touch. Thanks again. I swear I am going to purchase QL for Christmas.

    Case Head Separation

Here is what I do. I fireform virgin cases, then neck size them and reload for their second and sometimes third use if they still chamber easily. Once they no longer chamber easily, I measure their shoulder length using a Hornady headspace gauge. I assume this measurement is very close to the...
