I used to be a dyed in the wool leupold fan. I still think the vx3 line is a great hunting scope. Unfortunately they haven’t kept up with the dailing turrets that the other companies have.
If I was looking for a simple solid 3-9x40 it would be the trijicon accupoint, if it has turrets it...
These high gloss blued rifles really derserve a glossy blued scope, they just don’t look right with a matte scope. Better start scouring eBay for a gloss leupold.
When my buddy died this Christmas in a camper fire vortex replaced his spotter, three rifle scopes, a range finder, and a couple red dots. No questions asked, along with a very nice letter of condolence. Meant a lot to his sons.
The leupold vx5 that we sent in came back with a very generic...
I’ve been using the tripod for a couple years now. It’s unbelievably more steady than a a shooting stick. I find that with using a sling to create down pressure I can be very stable standing. I shot my moose at over 400 standing this year using my pig 0311 tripod with ball head.
If you’re really worried about it I’d go with nitride finish over cerakoat. I wouldn’t worry too much on the barrel length. A 20” 375 H&H stainless model 70 is never a bad thing to have in Alaska.
Blues guns will take a bit more maintenance and likely show more wear but will serve you well
Congrats on some great eating. You’ll love that havak 6.5 PRC. My two havaks are my go to rifles. My 6.5 havak is extremely accurate. 124gr hammer hunters have been fantastic in it.
Those 788 shot better than they had any reason too. I haven’t seen one that wouldn’t shoot great. I had one in 308 that was an honest sub moa gun for 5 shots every time.
Didn’t break my arm, caught me across the bicep and for arm. Stung like a bitch, but hardly broke the skin. That rope trick works pretty good.
The worst part was all the guff I got from my friends rolling up with a 330 on my left arm. Took a while to live down.
I once drove 20 miles with a 330 coni bear stuck on my left arm. I had to go to a friends to get help getting it off. Pretty bumbling experience. I always kept a lefty on rope on me after that. In a pinch a piece of rope with a loop on it will quickly reset those springs
Of the 4 animals I have harvested with the 124gr 6.5 hammer hunter the terminal performance was outstanding. 2 caribou and 2 whaitetails.
One whitetail doe was a straight on shot at base of the neck/brisket, at 120 yards, dropped at the shot. Lungs were scrambled
Another was a whitetail...
The 3” 686+ Is the most versatile revolver out there in my opinion. Properly loaded its effective on all predators 2 or 4 legged, easy to carry, and long enough to shoot accurately.
This little lever in 357 has killed more whitetail than I can count. It was most kids first deer hunt rifle, and out to 125 yards was deadly. 158gr Speer JSP @ 1800fps
Of all the “brush guns” I have owned I think this was the only one I ever took any game with. It was perfect for still...
I had similar performance but a pass thru with the 200gr ELDX on my moose this year. High shoulder shot at over 300 yards. I’m pretty impressed with the ELDX bullets.
