"Perfection is the enemy of good enough"
My goal is always meat in the freezer or dead varmints. Reloading and range shooting are steps to that end, not the goal itself. I've got some rifles I haven't even bothered to start reloading for because the first box of factory ammo shot so well. I have...
I agree with all the above... Fire lapping will work but it will stretch your throat and I believe it generally tapers the bore as most of the polishing is at the chamber end. I think that is a good thing. JB will give you more control on where you remove the material and how much. You've got to...
Never have used a HP for hunting... yet. I am starting on a 257 Roberts and have some 90gr HP GameKings that I'm going to try. I don't have any qualms about using them for eastern whitetails. "Tough" and "made for hunting" are relative terms. I've always considered Sierras in general on the soft...
Understand the brass thing. But I prefer the 300 in the 99. Have to load it different anyway and the 300 was made for the rifle. 308 is a younger cousin that the rifle was adapted to. Haven't reloaded for mine yet. I bought a box of Federal ammo when I got the rifle and it shot it so well I went...
I remain unconvinced on a faster twist of one or two inches per revolution increasing killing power. I am also unconvinced that expansion at a given impact velocity increases due to a higher muzzle velocity. That just doesn't pass the smell test. I doubt there is any significant reduction in...
I agree if you are going with a 160gr bullet or over you'll need a faster twist. Especially if they are monos. I use 150s in my Weatherby and 140s in my WSM. I don't agree that a bullet completing a revolution in one or two inches less distance will increase its killing power. What length is the...
Hate to be a contrarian... But based on your stated goals I just don't see it.
Better accuracy? - Weatherby's done right are plenty accurate.
Longer barrel life if loaded to Weatherby velocity? - I believe it is more a factor of how much powder you are burning in a given bore size than pressure...
"Not much expansion damage, with a near caliber size exit."
"I do not think the 225 did much if any expanding though."
Exactly why I don't use monos at those velocities, plus they're expensive. If you hit them in the CNS it doesn't matter much. Congrats on your bull.
ps: Partitions...
I got lucky. I knew he was well past 400 and didn't think he was 500 and split the difference. Had a good scope and way more time than a coyote usually gives you. The trajectory isn't much different than a 180gr 30-06 load.
Never tried that particular combo either. Don't have much reason to use monolithic bullets. I have pushed 250gr Sierras to 2800fps out of a 23" barrel without bumping the top. Made my longest shot on a live animal with this load. It wasn't a chuck but it was a varmint. A group of us go to south...
By "fastest powder" I assume you mean it gave the highest velocity... W760 / H414 will work fine and it does meter well. WLR primers are hot enough. If I was using Federal primers I would use the magnum version. I never particularly worried too much about temperature sensitivity although I don't...
Shot one at about 15 yds coming nearly straight at me. Hit him just below the point of the shoulder and missed the heart. The guide was happy as many Newfies consider the heart and liver the best parts.
Got one in the back of the safe. Inherited from my father who acquired it after he got home from WWII. He didn't care much for bolt rifles and like many of us wanted something a bit different. It is based off the 92 action, not the 94. Clearing woodchucks from farmer's fields was it's primary...
