for "affordable" I think Newfoundland will be the winner... A chest freezer and a portable generator will bring back two eastern moose in the back of a pickup and it's a scenic drive to boot.It IS a lot of meat. A lot of tender, tasty meat.
What is your velocity at 350yds for each of your loads? Penetration out there won't be a problem but expansion may be. I agree with Guy, that's a fairly long poke.
I've used it. It definitely works to smooth out a rough bore. It will also lengthen your throat and taper the bore somewhat - which is a good thing. I'd track your length to lands especially if you use the full series starting with 'coarse'.
No experience with the ETips but 1.5 moa is not too bad. The 338 is not a finicky cartridge to load but it can be a handful in a light rifle. It's a definite step up in power over 30-06 class cartridges and for me requires a bit more attention to detail off the bench for consistent results. I...
I went with IMR4350 because it was available and haven't had a reason to switch. I did try H4350 in a couple of calibers but the results didn't induce me to change. Recently I have made an effort to reduce the number of powders that I use just to simplify my life. IMR4350 is one that I'll...
No doubt the Hogue is stiffer and has better bedding but I don't care for them. The wrist goes almost vertical, is thick and has a big flare on the bottom. Just doesn't fit my hand or shooting style well. The material is very "grippy" also, too much so for me. I can't "slide" into position and...
Glad to see you out shooting that puppy. Also glad to hear it's not beating you up, but... Don't put that Ruger pad back on! I started with the factory pad on mine and it convinced me it needed replacing. Lighter bullet loads weren't bad but when I got up to full house 225's around 2900fps and...
Commented on that thread too... He never came back with what he figured out. I believe he ended up restocking it. He started out w/ .75"-1" groups with factory ammo, bedded the recoil lug (synthetic stock), floated the barrel, and worked on the trigger and had 2.5"-3" groups. He said he got it...
As a reloader and rifle looney we tend to look at all the available data and mull it over and over weighing all the minuscule differences in print... My best advice is load 'em up and go shoot. (y)
I have a few Rugers  and here is my process. It may not help you as much if you have completely floated the barrel. It's probably more critical with wood stocks than synthetic or laminate but it's what I do for all. I've never bedded a factory synthetic stock. I just make sure the...
I've got the same rifle. Mine is also closely chambered. It also has a pretty rough bore. A candidate for lapping that I haven't gotten around to yet. When new, groups opened up after three shots due to copper fouling and I don't shoot copper mono bullets. It's a bit better now but I still plan...
The only difference in the RMEF BLRs is engraving. I don't know what year that was produced. I believe they are LW '81s. The current MSRP is $1020. I would put no extra value on "special edition" myself. The advantage is you can handle & inspect it vice ordering one. Keep in mind the 270, 30-06...
I like a full case as much as the next guy. There's compressed and then there is compressed. I crimp all my hunting loads but it's not to keep the powder from pushing the bullet out sitting in the loading block. I don't believe in crushing powder kernels. That's where I draw the line.
Pistol grip or straight stock? I believe all 7-08's had 20" barrels. Much more than a "woods" rifle in either case. I have 2 and love them both. First was a LW '81 in 358W and then a LW w/ PG in 300WSM. While they are the same action to me they are very different in handling. They are both moa...
