For full disclosure, I didn't grow up in a hunting family. I did a little hunting a got a couple deer, but never beyond about 40 yards. That was when rifles weren't legal in my home state so I started with a 12 gauge before switching to a recurve and then a longbow. But I was always interested...
Thanks guys- and Guy. Ha! I guess I knew/know that 2780 with a 165 PT is "good enough" for this rifle. I was hoping for some reassurance, and figured this crowd would be good for that.
I just can't help but think that I could be doing basically the same thing with a good deal less powder in a...
My m70 featherweight hasn't ever been a great-shooting rifle. It doesn't much care for 180's. It doesn't shoot different weight bullets anywhere near the same location. The barrel heats up quickly and it doesn't group with a hot barrel. Load development has always been a struggle.
Up until...
The only thing that I can think you might be missing is a "please." No one on this forum is obligated to take their time to run numbers through a program that they spent their money on for anyone else. I always make sure to ask nicely when I've asked for quickload runs in the past. And I still...
Benchmark will probably be a little fast. Varget at around 26 grains shoots well with the 68 grain Hornady BTHP in my Howa .223 Mini. Let us know how it does. The 70 RDF is one bullet I'd really like to try in my rifle, too.
I'm a little surprised there hasn't been a .243" long range Accubond yet.
I'd still like to see a .308" 200 grain ballistic tip. The 200 Accubond is the only bullet I've tried that my 30-06 consistently shoots well, and 2700 fps doesn't require a bonded bullet. I also really like the green...
I'd be curious to see what actual pressure testing equipment would tell about some of these loads. But I guess as long as primer pockets are holding up...
I was wrong- it was:
65 grains- 2592 fps
65.5- 2578
66- 2606
66.5- 2616
67- 2606
My notes show that I also tried RL26 with the 250 Accubond, and got:
74 grains- 2663
74.5- 2659
75- 2693
75.5- 2699
76- 2717
I wasn't too...
I cut my barrel back to 22.5" and tried RL17 with 250 Accubonds last year. I loaded 5 cartridges with increasing charges by .5 grain increments. I'd have to go back and look to see exactly what they were, but I think it was 67.0, 67.5, 68.0, 68.5, and 69.0 grains. Velocity did not increase...
I feel like someone on another forum was using them to push 40 grainers over 4,000 fps in their .223 years ago. And I'm pretty sure some chastised him for pushing that combo too hard. It's probably a decent combination. You don't HAVE to try for 4,000 fps...
I got some .338 200 grain bt blems years ago with the grey tips. Since only bst's are/were available anymore, I assumed the same thing- ballistic silvertips that were blems so they didn't bother coating them.
I like the Swede. Really.
But if you want to maximize your 6.5 performance in a long action with handloading, a 6.5-06 trumps it easily. Yes, it burns a little more powder. But so does the Swede than a Creed.
If you want to maximize your 6.5 performance in 2.8" mag box, the Creed is the way to...
I loaded up a few 300 grain accubonds with RL26 last year just to see if they could hit 2500 fps. They did. And my rifle only has 22.5" of barrel. It took a lot more than 68 grains, though- I think it was something like 74 grains. I also loaded them to 3.500", which could make some difference...
I have tried Trail Boss in a .243 with 55 grain ballistic tips. I got better accuracy and pretty similar velocity at 12?(maybe 12.5) grains than 15 grains. I wouldn't go below 10 grains with Trail Boss. I've heard it can have issues when loaded at too low of a case fill.
I also tried 29 grains...
The RL22 might do it. Even though it and 7828 are nearly interchangeable for load data, I've had one rifle that would clover leaf with one but not the other.
If you don't already have other powders to try and you're looking to try something else(I would), H1000 would be my number one...
