"The weather was much nicer today. Since we didn’t have much time I was going up a trail close to the road. I had thought there was a lot of hunting pressure opening day, it was 10x worse. It was like combat fishing with rifles"
Yep, that's pretty much the gist of it. I've got a tag, but my...
I took a relatively large black bear with the 300WSM/180AB this spring.
The range was 105 yards with the bear quartering away. The first shot impacted behind the last rib, transversed the chest cavity and exited just behind the offside shoulder.
The bear spun and took off running. A second...
Here's a link to John Snow's write up on the Model 21 he took to Africa.

I've been eyeballing a new rifle for some time...
In the .223 your best bets are either a FMJ that will pencil through or something like a Varmint Grenade that won't exit at all. Either way, that's a lot of gun for a fox. Maybe some reduced loads that slow it down.
Depending on where/how you hunt, something like a .22WMR or Hornet might be a...
Those are all excellent points. I carry a .44, but I'm under no illusion that its primary benefit is the placebo effect. I also carry spray and I'm a huge proponent of the electric fence around my tent.
The proximity to town isn't surprising, all of my unpleasant bear encounters have occurred...
I had heard that S&W has ceased Thompson operations and is looking to spin off the brand and keep all the production equipment.
I think I'd send it to one of the TC specialists to retrofit.
I saw a brief Facebook blip about a Nosler Model 21. The rifle described was a .375 H&H.
A cursory Google search turned up a listing for a Model 21 in 28 Nosler at RGS Distributors. No photo or price.
It looks like Nosler may be giving us a new rifle this year. I'm very curious, especially...
That'd be a good bet. I don't have the numbers handy, but it's triple digits, and I never got an exit wound. That bullet would just come unglued in the lungs and basically disintegrate. It turned everything in the vitals to soup and I'm sure there were lead fragments everywhere.
Jim, I think this is a really valuable part of the conversation. When doing control work many years ago, I used the 125gr Winchester Silvertip- the old version, in a 30-06. That bullet is very soft and the MV was pretty darn high. I picked it because I didn't want pass throughs or ricochets...
I've had very few whitetail take off running, either in sport hunting or control work. Those were primarily shot with either a .308WIN or a 30-06. I don't remember the .308 load, but it was probably 150gr Core Lokt factory. The 30-06 was a 125gr Silvertip and it turned off deer like a lightning...
I've had very good results with RL17 out of the .300WSM but my best results are from Hybrid 100V (which is oddly, usually more available).
Hybrid100V doesn't deliver top velocity, but ES and SD numbers are single digit and accuracy is first rate. It's just very consistent in my rifle.
Bore size isn't particularly indicative of cartridge effectiveness on game.
A 7RM is considerably more powerful and versatile than a 6.5CM. If there's a drawback to the 6.5CM, it is the cartridge's relatively low muzzle velocity.
While MV isn't everything, it's something...and not to be...
I like bear a bunch of ways. Breakfast sausage is tough to beat but I've had cured and smoked ham from a bear last year that was wonderful. I had to debone this one in the field so I passed on a cured ham.
This one is in the process of getting turned into corned bear loin, bratwursts, breakfast...
