I wasn't really looking for something compact or light, I was looking to upgrade in that caliber in a bolt action, I was looking at this model given to limited choices in this caliber.
Great wY to spend the day in the woods! Here in OH I bow hunt more than gun given how our hunting seasons are structured, I'm hitting the woods for the first time this weekend with my new Hoyt.
I looked at a 700 mountain rifle similar to the one i was interested in and felt it was way too light for my liking and wasn't crazy about the thin barrel too. I think I'll stick with my encore for now, I know what I have in it, plus it's a tack driver with Nosler and Barnes bullets.
I did look...
I was a littlevworried what the muzzle jump might be like given how light it is. Non of the shops around here have one in stock to look at, I looked at a 700 SPS camo with a matte finish in 7mm Mag, I may go that route instead. I'd hate to drop good money on a rifle unseen only to find out I'm...
Finally decided to upgrade from my Encore Prohunter in 280 Rem to a Remington Mountain Rifle SS same caliber, and have seen reviews about the barrel being pencil thin compared to standard barrels. Anyone know roughly how much thinner it is compared to a standard barrel? I know was thinned down...
I hunt with a 280 Rem when I go to Montana either loaded with 150 gr PT's or 160 gr AB's and don't feel under gunned! I too carry a Ruger Alaskan on a chest rig. I seen a few Grizzlies from a distance nothing up close and personal, I did comes across a moose carcass that they got hold of.
I ordered a Savage model 16 weather warrior 300 WSM last night, I'm gonna use Federal Fusion ammo for breaking in the barrel, does bullet weight really matter for breakin' in a barrel? I'll probably be using the 180 gr bullets.
Not sure if I can get out for the spring season but have often wondered if there is a difference in the quality of meat and hide between taking one in the spring as opposed to the fall? I'll have a tag on me for the fall season.
Don't cheap out on what you buy! Especially footwear, sleeping bag & pad and tent.Because of where we hike into where we hunt in Montana we pack only what we need. I'm still using a Magellan Sportrack GPS and I carry topo maps and a compass in my daypack. Most of my gear is going on 10 years old...
I take two with me when I go to Montana, my 280 is my main rifle and I carry my 444 Marlin hiking in and out where we hunt in case we cross paths with a grizzly plus I have it as a backup rifle if I was to need one, I also pack my Ruger Alaskan 44 mag too.
