That’s pretty much the same as what I’ve always heard and lived by. I’ve never been around grizzly’s or have had the opportunity for one to bluff me. Nor do I want to be. I’ve always heard that black bears take a lot to get angry and attack but, when they do their playing for keeps. The bear I...
Thanks. I’ll give that a try. I tried 50/1000th as that was the old standard in my 06 but I’m getting two tight and one out at 2 o’clock. That seating depth is dead on with the old 150 gr XLC’s I had laying around but the LRX’s want something different. and that’s a 300 win mag not a 399...
I used IMR 4350 and 4831 as well in my prev 399 WM with 180 BT and 200 partitions. Worked well. I’m tinkering with RL26 and 175 LRX. Barnes right now. Figuring out the seating depth is all.
Could be. I have a “match grade” chamber with a tight throat. Not short necessarily just tight. So, amy variance in neck thickness or bullet slip under recoil will give me problems. Keeps me on my toes with my reloading practices. Necks get measured and turned and everything gets a good solid...
Reminds me f the “golden rule” when I was a dog handler in the USAF stationed at Howard AFB in Panama. The dogs we worked were sentry dogs or straight patrol dogs that were only good for tracking and bite work. We were alway told never let your eye level get below your dog’s or they’ll take you...
Worst was Remington 35 Whelen brass I reloaded from a couple of boxes of 200 grain core lokt ammo I bought. That stuff stuck even with low end start loads. I use Hornady and Nosler only now. I’ve found them to have very similar capacity, weight, longevity and overall performance.
Unfortunately I think that the growing perception is that bears, especially black bears, are harmless animals that go about their own business and shouldn’t be feared or respected. A condition that comes from a growing urban society that is ignorantly heading out to the country to recreate...
Black bear
30-06 150 gr mag tip
35 Whelen 250 Speer SP
300 Win Mag 150 XLC
44 Mag 240 Speer JSP GD
last was a decent boar that I popped the cherry on my M-21 300 WM. 352# dressed. Nice lookin noggin on him. Guessing over 400# live weight.
When I decided to build my 35 Whelen I seriously considered a 350 Remington Mag. Deciding factor was brass availability and ease of forming brass from 06 brass. I would definitely be happy with a 350 RM with enough box length and enough throat to comfortably handle 250’s.
I just watched a...
My funnest to shoot? Usually my M77 in 35 Whelen. Accurate, easy to load for and just flat out effective on game. Knocks things over DRT or DRT in a very short distance. I just put a set of irons on it of JD’s R700 with Williams firesight inserts. It handles well, shoots well and is about a...
I know little about flint locks other than the basics. I did however work for a log buyer in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan who bought high end maple for veneer. He’d ship it to a mill in Ohio where it was cut either on a slicer or a lathe of sorts. From there to Germany for dashboards on...
I have had excellent results with both the Speer 250 Hot Cor and the Hornady 250 interlock. only other load I shot out of it was factory Remington 200 grain core lokt which was dang accurate and plenty for deer. I hear some guys swear by it for moose up in Maine. I use RL15 as my mainstay...
So far so good with my 21 300 mag. I loaded up the last of my 150 grain Barnes XLC’s (yep old bullets). Three shots and zeroed and printed a bug hole size group at 100 yards. Those will work for deer and black bears this fall. The 175’s gave me two tight and one a little outside right at the 3...
👍 you need to find a way to hunt bear over hounds. It’s an absolute blast. Everyone bags on it and thinks you’re just shooting a bear out of a tree and “how hard could that be?” Let me tell ya it ain’t that easy. That tree might be a mile or more in the woods and you better run before that...
Well I’m no expert but aside from a lot of luck it looks like the hollow point got plugged by whatever, being it your clothing or something. Also likely a light load, squib or otherwise faulty which is very fortunate for you again. I’m thinking your angels were all in attendance. Had that...
