Those Solid Base 180-gr. 30-06 bullets in Federals Vital Shok line-up are extremely accurate, with 7/8" to 1 1/8" groups at 100 yards in a sporter hunting rifle.
Cudo's to Nosler for bring back a ballistically efficient 180-gr. bullet that achieves a high BC of .491 even with exposed tips.

Thanks for the feedback!

P.S. Do you feel 30-06 High Energy 180-gr. Partitions from Federal at 2,890 fps will penetrate any more than the standard factory Partitions at 2,700 fps?
Out of the above bullets, I'd rank them in the following order according to penetration ability (with a few other Noslers thrown in):
* Partition
* AccuBond
* Speer Hot Core
* Solid Base
* Remington Core Lokt
* Sierra Game King
* Ballistic Tip
On light-skinned game like deer, I too recommend...
Impressive results and thanks for the feedback!
Do you feel a 30-06 shooting 180-gr. Partitions / AccuBonds (SD of .271) at 2,750 fps MV will achieve similar results - at least as far as penetration is concerned?
Steve
P.S. .338 Noslers in 225-gr. have .281 SD's.
It's hard to beat those partitions for elk; I wish I had the confidence in AccuBonds to take this large animal as well; perhaps I need a little more education.
Elk Anatomy Overview: http://www.bowhunting.net/NAspecies/elk2.html
In looking at an elk's circulatory system and bone structure, there appears to be two good spots to shoot for:
1. Heart and Lung area slightly behind the front leg / near the top of the shoulder.
2. Spine / Base of Neck...
I vote Hornady first. They make projectiles for small, medium, and large game.
Second would be the ever-expanding Speer line-up that's charging fast (hint, hint, hint) and pushed by Federal.
Third would be the over-rated / overhyped Barnes, which has large critters covered, but not...
Using .308 caliber 180-gr. bullets as an example, which Nosler bullets will most likely have the same POA / POI at 100 yards?
* Ballistic Tip
* AccuBond
* Solid Base
* Partition
I'd like to get some penetration figures from Nosler and inquire whether or not they can successfully be used on both deer and elk.
I shoot 30-06 factory ammo from Winchester (180-gr. AccuBond & Ballistic Tips) and Federal (180-gr. Partition & Solid Base) in a Browning BAR.
For penetration...
